As a die-hard fan of the original “Cruel Intentions“, I was initially skeptical when I heard about its reimagining as a series. However, after watching the new show, I must say that my skepticism has been utterly shattered! Being a self-proclaimed connoisseur of all things ’90s, I’ve seen enough remakes to know what not to expect, but this one truly exceeded all expectations.
Planning to sabotage each other’s lives for amusement, a tradition among affluent teenagers that has endured through fashion trends and eras.
So, they transformed the 1999 film hit “Cruel Intentions” into a television series, expanding the roster of characters who are all morally questionable individuals, as they navigate the high-stakes social scene in a prestigious university’s Greek life system.
But what else separates the film from the new show?
In a fresh environment with a changed timeframe, there are numerous events happening today that resonate strongly, making it all feel very timely,” Brooke Lena Johnson, portraying ambiguous moral activist Beatrice, shared with TopMob News’ Francesca Amiker in an exclusive chat. “We still see the harshness and forbidden topics, but what stands out is that no one is purely good or evil.
Rest assured, there’s still a pair of siblings – Caroline (previously Sarah Catherine Hook) and Lucien (originally Zac Burgess) – engaging in intricate psychological games with each other, similar to how Kathryn and Sebastian, portrayed by Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe respectively, did in the film.
However, as Johnson elaborated, the characters deviate from what is traditionally expected. These exceptionally talented actors have skillfully transformed these characters into something entirely fresh and different.
As I step into my latest role as a professor in this exciting new series set at a fictitious Washington, D.C. university, you might recognize me from that risky game 25 years back with Gellar and Phillippe. But don’t be fooled by the professor’s cap – I came prepared to bring the heat!
Johnson stated, “He infused the show with a spirit that motivated many of us,” he said. He “brought across that particular vibe [originally], so we all adapted to it.” As for the rest of the original Cruel Intentions cast, she commented, “I hope they appreciate this fresh take on the story.
Speaking as a lifestyle advisor, I must commend the new character Beatrice, whom I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know. This dynamic individual possesses a clear, bold vision of her aspirations. She’s an unyielding spirit, ready to fight for what she deeply believes in and relentless in her pursuit of her goals. Her determination is truly inspiring!
It appears that Beatrice, who detests hazing and yearns to dismantle the snobbish sororities and fraternities at the heart of this society, seems like she belongs where she is.
Johnson went on to say, “There are many similarities between her character and others in the series. Throughout its duration, there’s a constant power struggle, taking place in an affluent, elite environment where characters strive to uphold their standing.
Furthermore, considering that individuals often straddle the line between heroes and villains, she noted, you’ll find them all venturing down a more ominous path as they pursue their desires.
Despite the questionable moral choices portrayed on-screen, I must admit that the energy on the Toronto set of this show was nothing short of radiant and uplifting. It felt like a beacon of positivity amidst the dramatic scenes we were creating together.
According to Johnson, there was an inviting atmosphere of familial warmth which allowed us to explore the sinister, unconventional aspects of the series more freely, as everyone involved seemed open and jovial.
She mentioned there was a lot of “brawling visible on camera,” but there was none of it happening off. After the excitement, everyone behind the scenes would simply laugh and say, “You’re fantastic!
For those seeking a deeper dive into the themes of the timeless tale, first introduced in the 1782 French novel “Les Liaisons Dangereuses“, the motives remain malicious and the relationships perilous. However, as Johnson puts it, the show serves as a refreshing change, offering a closer look at the extreme measures individuals take to achieve their goals.
Even if you think you know exactly what will happen because you’ve watched the movie before, the series will still take you by surprise, she asserted. “Each episode brings something new and unpredictable.
Cruel Intentions premieres Nov. 21 on Amazon Prime Video.
