Crunchyroll Wants to Make New Anime Series With Indian Stories, CEO Shares

As a dedicated anime enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the vibrant world of Japanese animation, I couldn’t be more thrilled about Crunchyroll‘s expansion plans in India! With its impressive roster of anime adaptations and manga, this streaming giant has already captured my heart, and now it’s set to conquer the Indian subcontinent.

Crunchyroll, a major influencer in the anime streaming market, boasts a wide variety of anime adaptations and manga within its collection. The platform revealed that it has over fifteen million subscribers worldwide, who are enjoying some of the most popular anime productions globally. Beyond North America and Japan, Crunchyroll’s reach now extends to countries like India. In a recent discussion, Crunchyroll’s CEO announced not only the company’s expansion in India but also plans for projects tailored explicitly for this region.

In a recent interview, Crunchyroll CEO Rahul Purini discussed the streaming service in India, expressing that they’ve been gradually increasing the amount of anime available in the region. He mentioned that Indian viewers have shown great enthusiasm for their content, and they are thrilled about the potential of the market. Essentially, every three months, Crunchyroll adds between 25 to 40 anime series to India, making it a highly appealing value proposition.

Crunchyroll’s Expansion Plans

According to Purini’s interview, the streaming service is planning to collaborate with Japanese creators to develop Indian characters, ideas, and narratives for unique anime productions. Moreover, the CEO emphasized that given the quick speed at which Japanese studios operate, it would be beneficial to establish India-focused original anime studios.

Apart from announcing growth plans in India, Rahul also touched upon Crunchyroll’s approach to subtitling and dubbing, stating, “We feel localized subtitles and dubbing are essential for fostering an emotional bond with anime. We take pride in the talented production team and voice actors we collaborate with to deliver this art form across various screens.”

In a more recent chat, Purini discussed the ongoing surge in anime’s popularity, stating, “Anime’s fame keeps expanding. It’s on the rise everywhere our business reaches. A survey by Vox Media, a digital media corporation, published in 2024 revealed that 42% of American Generation Z regularly watch anime each week. This trend aligns with our observations, and it seems that Generation Z and Generation Alpha (those born after the 2010s) have a particular fondness for anime, which is fueling its growth. This isn’t limited to Japan or Southeast Asia; it’s a global trend.”
