Crystal Dynamics, known for creating games such as the Tomb Raider series and Marvel’s Avengers, has shared news about job cuts. On social media platform X, they posted an announcement stating that they will be letting go 17 of their staff members.
Although Crystal Dynamics hasn’t disclosed the specific involvement of these staff members, they have stated that this personnel adjustment was made to better match the company’s organizational setup with its strategic business requirements for future prosperity.
This morning, Crystal Dynamics announced a tough choice: we’re letting go of 17 skilled team members. We didn’t take this step lightly. In the end, it was crucial to adjust our workforce in line with our present business requirements and the studio’s long-term prosperity. Please understand that this decision doesn’t reflect the commitment or talent of those affected.
As a devoted fan, I acknowledge how deeply this turn of events affects those involved, and I want you to know that we’re providing transition assistance and actively reaching out for new opportunities. Rest assured, Crystal Dynamics remains steadfast in our pursuit of crafting exceptional games. This shift doesn’t impact our ongoing project plans in any way.
Last update from Crystal Dynamics indicated they were developing their upcoming title within the Tomb Raider series. They were actively seeking additional team members, notably a seasoned artist specializing in the Tomb Raider franchise.
As a gaming enthusiast here, I’m excited to share that a fresh installment in the legendary Perfect Dark series is being developed at Crystal Dynamics, with potential collaborators including The Initiative. A job post from February hinted at their intention to release this game not just on the PS5, but also on Nintendo’s future console, tentatively named Switch 2. I, personally, applied for the role of Principal Graphics Engineer at The Initiative, hoping to be part of the team that brings this iconic title to life on these platforms.
In October, the reboot of Perfect Dark was given a new creative lead, Brian Horton, who previously worked for Insomniac Games. Before joining The Initiative and Crystal Dynamics, he served as the creative director on Marvel’s Wolverine, which is still in development at Insomniac Games.
Since the release of Marvel’s Avengers, Crystal Dynamics has encountered several difficulties. In 2023, while the studio was still under Embracer Group, it experienced a series of layoffs that affected ten employees. The studio described this action as part of an internal reorganization aimed at bringing the studio in line with current business requirements.
At approximately the same period, the studio halted any additional work on Marvel’s Avengers game. As of September 2023, this game has been removed from all online stores, making it difficult for new players to access unless they find a second-hand copy. Even if they do, only the single-player campaign in Marvel’s Avengers would be playable.
If you’re interested in learning more about Crystal Dynamics’ final project, Marvel’s Avengers, here is our take on the game. For a brighter perspective, feel free to watch some gameplay footage of Perfect Dark that highlights its stealth mechanics and the assortment of gadgets players can use.
This morning, Crystal Dynamics announced a challenging move: letting go of 17 skilled team members from our staff. This wasn’t an easy choice for us. In the end, we felt it was crucial to make adjustments in order to more effectively match our current operations with our strategic goals.
