As a long-time Game Boy Advance (GBA) gamer with fond memories of exploring pixelated worlds and engaging in intense shoot-’em-up battles, I can’t contain my excitement about the recent announcements regarding classic GBA games making their way to modern platforms. The addition of three previously unreleased Japanese titles on Nintendo Switch Online has already added some fresh content to my gaming library. However, the news that WayForward is bringing back one of my all-time favorite games – Sigma Star Saga – is truly a game-changer!
As a dedicated gamer of classic titles, I’ve been thrilled with the recent announcements regarding Game Boy Advance games. Nintendo Switch Online has already added three previously unreleased-outside-of-Japan games to our weekly lineup. But that’s not all! WayForward announced this week that they will be bringing forward one more beloved Game Boy Advance game, “Sigma Star Saga,” to modern platforms around twenty years after its initial release. Originally exclusive to the Game Boy Advance since then, it will be re-released on both modern platforms and the Game Boy Advance itself in 2025.
Back in 2005, WayForward Technologies created “Sigma Star Saga” for the Game Boy Advance. Now, after a long wait of almost 20 years, this beloved and much-requested game is set to make its comeback in 2025 through a collaboration between WayForward, Bandai Namco Entertainment, and Limited Run.
Following its debut in North America on the Game Boy Advance (GBA) in 2005, “Sigma Star Saga” didn’t make it to Europe until the following year. However, this classic game has always remained exclusive to the GBA platform. The revamped edition of the game is now set for a return on the GBA alongside new versions for personal computers and modern consoles. While WayForward hasn’t announced specific platforms for the global release outside of the GBA and PC editions, it’s safe to assume that it will likely be available on popular systems like the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.
In Sigma Star Saga, developed by WayForward, players assume the role of Allied Earth Federation pilot Ian Recker who infiltrates the Krill Empire undercover as a double agent in an attempt to save humanity. To accomplish this mission, you will collaborate with both humans and the Krill, traversing six distinct planets with progressively expanding tools and abilities. Additionally, you’ll engage enemy forces in thrilling shoot-em-up space battles using over 70 unique Gun Data items. This classic Gameboy Advance title offers captivating pixel-art graphics, challenging boss encounters, and a thought-provoking narrative complete with multiple endings.
The specific date for the re-release of “Sigma Star Saga” has not been announced yet, but it’s planned to be brought back into the market sometime in the upcoming year for the Gameboy Advance (GBA) platform.
