Cult-Classic PlayStation Vita Game to Return With New Remaster

As someone who spent countless hours huddled over my PlayStation Vita during the golden years of portable gaming, the announcement of Freedom Wars Remastered is like finding a long-lost treasure chest filled with old memories and new possibilities. The original game was a diamond in the rough back in 2014, with its unique blend of action, strategy, and co-op gameplay that was sadly overlooked by many.

It’s widely recognized that one of the standout games for the PlayStation Vita, a system with a rich history, is coming back in a remastered version in 2025. Despite Sony’s later handheld device being perceived as a flop by the company, it still housed some exceptional titles. Games like “Tearaway,” “Persona 4 Golden,” and “Gravity Rush” were all unique to Vita and contributed to its collection of overlooked masterpieces. Remarkably, one of these hidden treasures is making a comeback and will be available on platforms beyond the PlayStation family.

Today, publisher Bandai Namco unexpectedly unveiled that they are re-releasing the game “Freedom Wars” as “Freedom Wars Remastered.” Originally developed by Dimps and launched in 2014, “Freedom Wars” is an action game designed for cooperative play, initially exclusive to the PS Vita. Interestingly, Sony also published this game, implying that Bandai Namco’s reintroduction of the game includes their acquisition of the intellectual property (IP) from Sony.

Consequently, “Freedom Wars Remastered” is slated to drop on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC platforms, with the official release taking place on January 10, 2025. This revamped edition of the game retains its original narrative and mechanics, tailored for various systems. Moreover, it boasts enhanced graphics, including improved textures and character models, 4K resolution, increased difficulty levels, and a novel crafting aspect.

Initially, when Freedom Wars first dropped, the reception wasn’t entirely positive, with an average Metacritic score of just 73/100 on the Vita version. However, over time, this game has evolved into a cherished cult classic among fans, who hold it dear in their memories. The unexpected announcement of a remaster for Freedom Wars has left me pleasantly surprised, and I believe it will propel the franchise to unprecedented heights.

Freedom Wars Remastered

In the far-off times, mankind faces a tough battle to stay alive. The planet has been severely damaged by pollution, and what’s left of humanity is segregated within massive detention centers called Panopticons. Resources are so scarce that simply living is considered a crime, and those born are given sentences of a million years in prison. Nicknamed ‘Sinners’, the only alternatives to serving time or waiting for death in prison are to join forces with allies to secure resources, rescue fellow citizens from abduction by adversaries, or engage in combat against other enemy Sinners.

As a die-hard fan, I’m thrilled about the enhanced version of Freedom Wars Remastered. This updated edition offers visual improvements like 4K resolution, improved textures, and smooth 60fps performance on both PlayStation and PC via Steam. Not only that, but it also features a revamped weapon crafting system, along with various gameplay upgrades, and the addition of difficulty settings.
