In a recent reveal by Manny Jacinto, who plays ‘The Acolyte’, it was mentioned that an R-rated scene featuring the character Qimir nearly made it into the final cut of the Star Wars series on Disney+. This prequel series, created by Leslye Headland, introduced Qimir as a merciless villain and enigmatic Sith Lord who singlehandedly defeated multiple Jedi in a striking lightsaber duel on the planet Khofar. Despite the cancellation of ‘The Acolyte’, the enigma surrounding Qimir continues to intrigue Star Wars fans, leaving them wondering about his true identity as a Sith Lord or something else entirely.
During the time of the High Republic, it’s widely debated where the villain Qimir hails from in Star Wars lore. However, one thing is certain: Qimir was arguably one of the Jedi Knights’ deadliest enemies. At a recent fan convention, Manny Jacinto hinted that there might be more to Qimir than we initially thought, as he discussed a deleted R-rated scene suggesting that Qimir could be even more menacing than previously believed.
During the Denver Fan Expo, Manny Jacinto (through Screen Rant) revealed a graphic, R-rated sequence featuring Qimir, which was originally part of The Acolyte, but was removed during the intense lightsaber battle on planet Khofar.
Jacinto mentioned that at one point, Qimir had been planned to brutally hit a Jedi’s head against a rock repeatedly, but this scene was removed as “Star Wars” has consistently fallen under a PG (Parental Guidance) rating.
Star Wars has typically been rated PG, but if you’re looking for more gruesome elements of the battles, there was an instance where I repeatedly smashed a Jedi’s head against a rock. This was done to demonstrate the ruthless nature of this character without any hint of regret.
In the abandoned sequence, the decision to keep Star Wars’ kid-friendly tone was justified. Yet, it would have intensified the fearsome nature of Qimir in The Acolyte, if we had witnessed a more violent and intimidating portrayal of him, emphasizing his menacing presence against the Jedi Knights even more significantly.
The Acolyte
The story centers on a past Padawan who encounters her Jedi Master once more, this time to delve into a string of mysterious killings. As they progress, they uncover a shocking truth about the Dark Side of the Force. Alongside Manny Jacinto in the cast of The Acolyte are Lee Jung-jae, Amandla Stenberg, Dafne Keen, Rebecca Henderson, Charlie Barnett, and Carrie-Anne Moss. In simpler terms, The Acolyte’s narrative revolves around a former Jedi apprentice reconnecting with her master to solve a series of murders, which ultimately reveals secrets about the Dark Side of the Force. Joining Manny Jacinto in this cast are Lee Jung-jae, Amandla Stenberg, Dafne Keen, Rebecca Henderson, Charlie Barnett, and Carrie-Anne Moss.
Why Star Wars Should Experiment With the R-Rating
A harsher portrayal of Qimir might have boosted the impact of “The Acolyte,” as it would have set the show apart by being the sole R-rated series within the Star Wars brand, potentially making it more distinctive.
As I stood amidst the fierce lightsaber battle on Khofar, I couldn’t help but shiver at the ruthless slaughter Qimir was inflicting upon the Jedi. If the chilling scene of him brutally smashing another Jedi’s head against a rock had made it into the final edit, it would have left no doubt in anyone’s mind that Qimir is a relentless foe who spares no mercy.
In the earlier discussion, it was noted that Qimir is an unyielding adversary lacking any commendable traits. Adding the scene mentioned by Manny Jacinto would enhance the project and potentially boost Qimir’s standing among Star Wars’ roster of villains (for more details on The Acolyte’s Qimir, check out these five intriguing facts).
Since Marvel Studios has ventured into R-rated content with Deadpool and Wolverine, as well as Daredevil: Born Again with its TV-MA rating, some fans believe that it’s now appropriate for Star Wars to delve into projects suitable for mature audiences. The series Andor demonstrated a gritty yet captivating narrative style without compromises, which resonated strongly with many fans and was well-received.
Allowing for greater artistic license and delving into adult topics could significantly enhance Star Wars, demonstrating that breaking free from some PG limitations is crucial to its growth and success in R-rated films.
