Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel Could Take Five to Six Years to Develop – Co-CEO

On a recent investor conference, CD Projekt RED indicated that discussions about a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 are premature at this point. During the call (available below), CD Projekt RED’s co-CEO Michał Nowakowski mentioned that their game development process typically spans around four to five years, from pre-production to final release.

Regarding your question about the timeline for The Witcher 4 possibly hinting at a release date for Cyberpunk 2077’s sequel, Nowakowski stated that it typically takes around four to five years from pre-production to final release for their studio projects. However, he emphasized that each project is unique and numerous factors can impact the end result, so he declined to provide a specific timeframe for when we might expect a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel.

If The Witcher 4 is progressing as planned for a 2027 release, it’s reasonable to infer that CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk sequel, known internally as Project Orion, might be in the early stages of development. It’s important to remember that the studio has not yet confirmed a Cyberpunk sequel officially. Most of what we know about this game is based on their efforts to enlarge their development teams through job postings.

A job advertisement posted in February for a lead encounter designer hinted at the revival of Project Orion, which promises an open-world environment once more. The job announcement also emphasized that the game would showcase “the most authentic and responsive crowd system ever seen in a game,” setting a high standard. In this role, the lead game designer will focus on designing experiences that cater to various play styles, offering unique and distinct outcomes for players who choose different approaches to gameplay.

A job posting from February hints at a return of the Project Orion, as it will employ a first-person perspective similar to its previous version. The position advertised was for a senior animator in games. Prospective candidates were asked to present an animation reel showcasing exceptional 1st person view model animation, suggesting that the company intends to continue offering first-person gameplay experience in their upcoming Project Orion release.

According to Mike Pondsmith, creator of Cyberpunk, there’s a possibility of a new city appearing in the sequel. In an interview, he described this new city as having a feel reminiscent of a dystopian Chicago, rather than the Blade Runner-esque atmosphere that Cyberpunk 2077 chose for its Night City setting.

In another city we visit, Night City remains, but when I gazed at it, I thought, “Indeed, I grasp the vibe you’re aiming for, and it certainly fits,” said Pondsmith. “It doesn’t evoke the atmosphere of Blade Runner. Instead, it resembles Chicago in a state of decay. Upon seeing it, I agreed, ‘Yes, this concept could work.’

At present, CD Projekt RED is preparing vigorously for the debut of the Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, slated to be among the initial games launched for the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5.
