Cyberpunk 2077 sequel enters pre-production as Phantom Liberty crosses 10 million copies sold

The sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 is now in pre-production at CD Projekt RED.

Based on CD Projekt’s most recent investor update, it was announced on Wednesday that the development of Cyberpunk 2077’s sequel has progressed to a new phase. As per the official division of labor, there are currently 96 team members working on the project, which is a substantial increase from the 56 employees who were involved in 2024.

Under the codename “Orion,” the development of Cyberpunk 2077’s sequel is being spearheaded by a team at CD Projekt RED’s Boston branch. This team includes several key figures who previously contributed to the critically-lauded expansion of Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty.

During the same investor briefing, CD Projekt revealed that Phantom Liberty has surpassed 10 million units in sales, marking a rise of 2 million since the last milestone announced in November 2024. This total reflects both standalone copies and those packaged within the Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition.

In the world of video games, “pre-production” is often used to describe an extensive phase of game development that happens prior to the main production. Although each studio may have its own approach, pre-production generally entails defining the precise parameters of the game and establishing a solid foundation with a smaller team. Once this groundwork is laid, more personnel are brought in to continue the project.

Moving forward, the majority of CD Projekt RED’s development team is currently focused on The Witcher 4, a project that officially entered full production in November 2024. It’s also worth noting that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has surpassed sales of 60 million copies.

In a different location, another team at CD Projekt RED’s Boston office (previously known as The Molasses Flood) is working on a spin-off from The Witcher series, temporarily named Sirius. Meanwhile, CD Projekt RED is collaborating with an external studio called Fool’s Theory to remake the original Witcher game using Unreal Engine 5.

The video games “Cyberpunk 2077” and “Phantom Liberty” are now playable on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and PlayStation 5. It has been planned for a Nintendo Switch 2 release on June 5, 2025, and the game is also being adapted for Mac systems.
