Although CD Projekt RED has provided excellent post-release support for Cyberpunk 2077, it appears they are aiming their focus towards a future project, internally referred to as Project Orion. Job listings on the studio’s website suggest that they are expanding their team for Project Orion, with some roles hinting at an expansive open-world setting.
One position available is for a Lead Encounter Designer, with the role description suggesting that CD Projekt RED aims to create more lifelike and responsive NPC crowds than they’ve showcased in their previous games. This role also entails designing experiences that accommodate various player styles by incorporating “divergent experiences.
One key duty of the lead encounter designer involves working closely with the systems design team to develop a highly interactive and lifelike crowd system within our game, surpassing those found in previous games.
Due to Project Orion‘s ongoing advanced development phase, we’re yet to fully understand the specific level of detail in interactions with Non-Player Character (NPC) crowds within the game. The information suggests that these NPCs will respond to actions initiated by players, but it remains unclear if player-NPC interactions in the open world will reach unprecedented heights at this point.
2022 saw the disclosure of Project Orion through CD Projekt’s investor relations Twitter handle. At that time, they shared their long-term strategies without revealing specific details about the project other than it would be handled by CD Projekt RED. However, the project was characterized as a grand display of the complete might and potential embedded within the Cyberpunk universe.
Since that time, CD Projekt RED has been consistently expanding their team for ‘Project Orion.’ By February 2024, they welcomed developers who previously worked at prominent studios such as Ubisoft Massive, Blizzard, BioWare, and WB Games. As of July 2024, a former associate narrative director from Insomniac Games’ ‘Marvel’s Wolverine’ project had also joined CD Projekt RED to contribute to the development of ‘Project Orion.’
2023 saw the announcement from the studio that they would be crafting “Project Orion” using Unreal Engine 5. At that point, their focus was on establishing the game’s fundamental design concepts. Lead quest designer Pawel Sasko emphasized that the team had a significant amount of work ahead to master Unreal Engine 5 and its diverse functionalities.
Currently, CD Projekt RED is getting ready for what’s known as “The Witcher 4”. This role-playing game was first unveiled at The Game Awards in December. Unlike previous games where Geralt of Rivia has been the main character, Ciri will take center stage in this new installment. However, don’t worry Geralt fans, he will still appear in the game, and his voice actor thinks it’s a smart decision to focus on Ciri as the lead character.
In development for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, The Witcher 4 promises to keep fans delighted, as executive producer Gosia Mitręga hinted at the inclusion of a popular activity from The Witcher 3: Card Game (Gwent) in the new release.
