Although it had a bumpy start, the game Cyberpunk 2077, together with its Phantom Liberty expansion pack, has since soared to great heights and is now recognized as one of the biggest hits in gaming this decade.
With the game now fully developed, enthusiasts are starting to look forward, and developers CD Projekt Red have indeed confirmed they’re diligently working on a follow-up title.
Instead, let’s delve into all the information that enthusiasts refer to as ‘Cyberpunk 2’, while the creators label it as ‘Orion’.
Cyberpunk 2077 sequel: Project Orion explained
To begin with clarity, it’s important to note that Project Orion is indeed under development, having been announced as such all the way back in 2022.
Additionally, we understand that the project is being handled by CD Projekt Red’s studios based in Boston and Vancouver, possibly due to the fact that their primary studio in Poland is engrossed in developing The Witcher 4 at present.
A number of key developers from the original game are officially involved in Projekt Orion’s development. This includes Igor Sarzyński as narrative director, Gabriel Amatangelo as game director, Pawel Sasko as associate game director, Andrzej Stopa as cinematic director, Kacper Niepokólczycki as environment art director, Sarah Grümmer as lead quest designer, and Kacper Kościeński as engineering director.
As a devoted fan, I recall when the game was unveiled, the news broke that CD Projekt Red was moving away from their self-developed engine and decided to craft the game using Unreal Engine 5.
Regarding the game, Cyberpunk is planning to keep its open-world structure while also growing it. A significant new city will be introduced alongside Night City from the initial game, according to Mike Pondsmith, who created the original Cyberpunk tabletop role-playing game in May 2025.
According to associate director Pawel Sasko, it’s rumored that the upcoming game will offer a more responsive experience. In an interview with Aftermath, he emphasized that the sequel should reflect and acknowledge the decisions made by the players.
In your narrative, if you’ve chosen a particular path for your character (V) and your companions, that’s the journey you’re on. It’s crucial to remember when making these choices not to undermine the actions of other players because each decision they make is part of their unique story.
When could Cyberpunk 2077 sequel be released?
Simply put, there’s currently no set date for the next installment of Cyberpunk 2077, and it looks like we’ll have to wait a while before we can play it.
Back in February 2024, CD Projekt Red announced that the new game they’re working on is still in its initial phases of creation. Given that the Phantom Liberty DLC came out in 2023, this timing seems fitting.
Considering the limited information available, it might be beneficial to investigate the development timeline of Cyberpunk 2077 instead, as it appears less appealing to read at the moment.
Initially revealed back in 2012, Cyberpunk 2077 didn’t hit shelves until 2022 – given this timeline, if Project Orion follows a similar trajectory, its release date would be no sooner than 2030 at the earliest. And that’s not even considering the transition to a new engine or the investment in The Witcher 4.
Absolutely, these musings are purely conjectural. However, considering the immense success Cyberpunk has enjoyed, both as a video game and an animated series, it’s reasonable to assume that the creators will likely invest more resources into its development in future iterations.
So, it’s our expectation that a Cyberpunk sequel might come out by the end of this decade. However, it could simply be optimism on our part; we can only wait and find out!
