CD Projekt RED’s PR manager Ola Sondej has disclosed that the team has been informally referring to the next game in the Cyberpunk series as “Cyberpunk 2,” but this doesn’t automatically imply it will be a direct sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, according to The Verge.
As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but share my excitement after hearing about CD Projekt Red stepping into the pre-production phase of what we’ve been calling “Project Orion”, which is none other than Cyberpunk 2! This exciting news came during their latest earnings report. They also mentioned that the title “Cyberpunk 2” might not be its final name, so let’s keep an eye out for further updates!
Although production on the game may be underway, it could still be anywhere from four to five years before the game itself becomes available. During the same conference call, co-CEO Michał Nowakowski mentioned that CD Projekt RED typically takes about five years for a game to progress from pre-production to its final release date.
As a passionate fan, I can share that our creative process from the early stages to the ultimate launch typically spans around four to five years, give or take. When asked about whether this timeline might hint at what’s in store for a potential Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, CD Projekt Red’s spokesperson, Nowakowski, didn’t commit to any specific years. However, he emphasized that every project is unique and numerous factors can impact the final result.
Back in February 2024, Project Orion was revealed to be in its initial stages of creation. Gabriel Amatangelo, who previously worked on the expansion ‘Phantom Liberty’ for Cyberpunk 2077, is taking charge as the game’s director. In addition to Amatangelo, Dan Hernberg serves as executive producer, Ryan Barnard acts as design director, and Alan Villani holds the position of engineering director. All three individuals have extensive experience in the video game industry; Hernberg has worked at Blizzard, Barnard at Ubisoft Massive and IO Interactive, while Villani has been with WB Games.
Even though specifics about Project Orion (or Cyberpunk 2) are yet to be fully disclosed, back in 2022, the studio’s Chief Financial Officer, Piotr Nielubowicz, provided some insight on the potential number of developers required for the game. During an investor call, he suggested that they could draw inspiration from Cyberpunk 2077’s development team, and mentioned that the new project might necessitate between 350 to 500 developers.
Regarding the total number of team members needed for such a production, he suggested using “Cyberpunk 2077”, our latest game launch, as a benchmark. This project serves as a useful comparison when estimating development staff and similar future projects of this magnitude. His estimate at that time was that around 350 to 500 developers would likely be required.
The main progress of the Project Orion is being driven by CD Projekt RED’s North American team, while they receive assistance from their counterparts based in Boston, Vancouver, and Poland.
Game creator Mike Pondsmith has mentioned that Cyberpunk 2 will be set in a new city, which he likens to a dystopian version of Chicago rather than the Blade Runner-esque Night City we know from the original. However, it’s worth noting that Night City itself will still feature in some capacity within the game.
