As a seasoned gamer and lifelong Marvel fan, I must say the news about Marvel Zombies has sent my excitement levels skyrocketing! Growing up with the original comic series, I remember the chills of fear and anticipation that came with each issue. Now, to see it coming to life in an animated TV-MA event series is simply mind-blowing!
On Saturday, following an exhilarating D23 panel by Marvel Studios on Friday night, it was Marvel Animation’s turn at D23. They unveiled sneak peeks of their upcoming projects. Among other announcements, Bryan Andrews from Marvel Animation hinted at the comeback of Iron Fist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Moreover, he revealed that the animated series “Marvel Zombies” will carry a mature TV-MA rating and will consist of a four-episode “event series.”
The TV-MA rating for the show was set when it was initially announced in 2022; however, the episode durations were not disclosed at that time. Marvel Studios indicated that the show would premiere in 2024, but it’s uncertain if this timeline remains valid.
The upcoming series is Marvel’s second production to receive a TV-MA rating, following “Echo,” which debuted on both Disney+ and Hulu this year.
In simpler terms, Brad Winderbaum of Marvel Studios shared on the ComicBook’s Phase Zero podcast that their initial aim wasn’t to create a TV-MA series. Instead, they aimed to focus on Maya Lopez character development. Her background is marked by violence, and she resides in a morally ambiguous space. As our executive producer and director Sydney Freeland stated, the show takes an uncompromising approach.
The executive producer of Echo commented: “We allowed Maya to guide her own journey, which ultimately resulted in a mature, TV-MA rated production.”
Marvel Studios’ upcoming lineup features the movies “Captain America: A New World” (February 14th, 2025), “Thunderbolts” (May 5th, 2025), “The Fantastic Four: Initial Journey” (July 25th, 2025), “Blade” (November 7th, 2025), “Avengers: The Endgame” (May 1st, 2026), and “Avengers: Secret Wars” (May 7th, 2027).
Marvel Television’s series “Agatha All Along” will start streaming on Disney+ in September, while “Daredevil: Born Again” is scheduled for release next March. As for Marvel Animation, they haven’t announced the air dates yet for the second season of “X-Men ’97”, the premiere of “Black Panther: Eyes of Wakanda”, “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man”, and “Marvel Zombies”.
