Dalgliesh’s Bertie Carvel says Miskin is “key” to “new relationship”

As a long-time admirer of Bertie Carvel‘s versatile acting skills, I am thrilled to see him return as Dalgliesh for another season. What makes this third installment even more intriguing is his foray into directing one of the cases. It’s not every day you find an actor who can juggle both roles effectively – it’s like watching a talented circus performer on a unicycle, but instead of balls and scarves, we have crime-solving and storytelling!

Bertie Carvel returns yet again as Dalgliesh for another round, this time tackling three fresh mysteries based on the works of P.D. James.

This season, Carvel not only appears in front of the camera, but he’s also moving behind it, taking on the role of director for one case spanning over two episodes.

His approach works well for him, but it may not fit every situation or individual, which rings true. It seems beneficial to Dalgliesh and I believe it also benefits us as viewers.

As a film enthusiast, I find it incredibly gratifying to witness his struggles unfold. There’s something truly delightful about seeing him thrown off balance, and that’s exactly what Tarrant does to him.

He continued: “Then Sam [Swainsbury], wonderful, lovely, Sam Swainsbury. Roscoe, I feel, was like the perfect sidekick for those episodes, not least because, if I’m honest with you, a lot of my attention was on directing.

Having a sidekick like Roscoe, who was so self-reliant and needed minimal guidance from Dalgleish, allowed Dalgleish to do very little directing. This turned out to be surprisingly beneficial since, if I had to portray a character managing many things while also juggling another role with significant management responsibilities, the task might have become overwhelming. So, having Roscoe by his side was quite advantageous.

Later, Carvel discussed Detective Sergeant Kate Miskin, portrayed by Carlyss Peer, who appeared throughout each season of the drama series.

However, it’s important to consider his injury and sorrow, the initial focus of this series, as the gradual melting of a small piece of ice over these past three years has been the main event.

A significant aspect of this dynamic, in my opinion, is attributed to DS Kate Miskin and their intricate, at times complex, connection. Naturally, it’s worth mentioning that by the conclusion of the series, he will make a bold move, take a chance, and expose himself to possible harm once more by initiating a fresh relationship with Emma Lavenham [Claire Goose].

The reason is Miskin. The insights I believe he’s gained, and the fact that he has previously shut opportunities, which he acknowledges are incomplete, have pushed him to reopen them and take a risk.
