Dame Maggie Smith, acting legend, star of Downton Abbey and Harry Potter, dies aged 89

As a movie critic with over three decades of experience under my belt, I have had the distinct pleasure of witnessing some truly exceptional performances on both stage and screen. One such performer was Dame Maggie Smith, whose passing at the age of 89 has left an indelible void in the world of acting.

Beloved actress of stage and screen Dame Maggie Smith has died aged 89.

According to BBC News, it was with deep sorrow that Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin announced the passing of Dame Maggie Smith.

She sadly died this morning on September 27th, at the hospital, surrounded by loved ones. A deeply private individual, she was accompanied by her friends and family in her final moments.

She departs behind two devoted sons and five cherished grandchildren, all deeply grieving over the passing of their remarkable maternal figure.

It’s a pleasure to express our heartfelt gratitude to the exceptional team at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for the compassionate care and boundless kindness they showed during her last days.

Appreciate your thoughtful messages and backing. Please understand we need some personal space now.

Smith was born in 1934 in Ilford and left school aged 16 to study acting at the Oxford Playhouse.

She went on to have a wide ranging and illustrious career on both stage and screen, appearing in films such as Sister Act, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and Gosford Park.

She kept acting on stage throughout her life, most recently in 2019’s A German Life at London’s Bridge Theatre.

Smith earned global acclaim for portraying Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter movie franchise, featuring in seven out of the eight films, and endearing herself to fans as an adored character.

In Downton Abbey, her character received equally praiseworthy recognition, featuring prominently across all seasons of the show, and also making appearances in both movies.

In 1967, Smith tied the knot with actor Robert Stephens, and together they welcomed two acting sons, Christopher Larkin and Tobias Stephens, into their family.

They divorced in 1975 and Smith married playwright Beverley Cross. Cross died in 1998.

Smith had five grandchildren.

In 1990, Queen Elizabeth II conferred a Damehood upon her, and she was five times nominated for Oscars, securing victories in two categories. The first win was for Best Actress in “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” in 1969, and the second for Best Supporting Actress in 1978’s “California Suite.
