Damian Wayne: The Next Ra’s al Ghul? Shocking Twist Revealed!

As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but ponder an intriguing twist on the traditional narrative of Batman’s successor. Instead of Damian Wayne inheriting his father’s mantle, what if he was destined to become the next Ra’s al Ghul?

Since Damian’s introduction in 2006, fans have been captivated by his transformation from a rebellious and headstrong Robin to a reliable partner for Batman. The bond between Bruce Wayne and Damian has evolved into a genuine father-son relationship. However, the shadow of Ra’s al Ghul will forever cast a long and ominous presence over Damian, regardless of whether he acknowledges it or not.

SPOILER ALERT: The following discussion contains spoilers for Batman and Robin #19.

In issue #19 of the Batman and Robin series, the creative team comprises Philip Kennedy Johnson, Javi Fernandez, Marcelo Maiolo, and Steve Wands. This instalment is part six of the “Memento” storyline where the Dynamic Duo are pursuing a new villain to add to Batman’s infamous rogues gallery. However, during their investigation into Memento’s murders across Gotham City, there’s another mystery troubling Batman – concerning his son Damian’s connection with Dr. Bashar.

Damian Wayne wants to quit being Robin and Batman’s sidekick

It’s been discovered that Batman spied on Robin’s talks with Dr. Bashar, which has strained their relationship. Oracle has uncovered information about Dr. Bashar for Batman, revealing he may have connections to Ra’s al Ghul and the League of Assassins. This confirmation, combined with Batman’s initial suspicions, leads him to believe that Dr. Bashar is not trustworthy. However, the challenge lies in that Dr. Bashar has earned Damian’s trust. Taking direct action against Dr. Bashar might push Robin away from Batman.

In issue #18 of Batman and Robin, Damian announces his plans to enroll in Dr. Bashar’s youth program at the hospital where Thomas Wayne once worked. This means he intends to leave his role as Robin behind after capturing Memento. It’s remarkable that a hero would voluntarily step down from their duties, and this is particularly striking for Damian, who is connected to both the heroic Batman and the villainous Ra’s al Ghul. This decision suggests that Damian understands the unhealthy nature of his life as a costumed hero. Instead, he wishes to don medical scrubs and contribute in a more traditional medical capacity. It’s clear that Damian doesn’t aim to emulate Ra’s al Ghul’s path, but history has shown us that these choices can lead to unexpected outcomes.

Batman Beyond reveals a dark future for Damian Wayne

In a different version of DC’s reality, Damian Wayne eventually took over as Ra’s al Ghul. The ‘Futures End’ storyline, which was connected to ‘Batman Beyond’, depicted an older Damian Wayne coming back to Gotham after Bruce Wayne had given up the Batman mantle. Interestingly, this occurred just when the League of Assassins decided to assault Gotham. As luck would have it, Damian happened to be in town at that very moment. To defend against the attackers, he put on the ‘Batman Beyond’ suit. However, this armor had a sinister purpose – it was intended to manipulate Damian’s mind, which was exactly what Ra’s al Ghul had planned from the start.

Initially, Damian harbored feelings of jealousy towards Terry McGinnis, doubting his worthiness to succeed Bruce Wayne as the future Batman. Consequently, rather than joining forces with Batman Beyond, Damian chose a different path and assumed the role of Ra’s al Ghul and leadership of the League of Assassins. However, after engaging in conflict with Terry, Damian eventually regained his composure and resolved their dispute. From that point onward, he continued to serve as the head of the League of Assassins, using his position to guide the organization towards righteousness.

There seems to be some ambiguity about whether the “Memento” plotline in Batman and Robin will require Damian Wayne to make a difficult choice between Batman and Ra’s al Ghul, but it certainly raises an intriguing question. If Damian ends up aligning with Ra’s al Ghul, at least there is historical precedent for him to carry on his heroic duties.
