Actor Damien Molony, famous for his role on Bergerac, shared that he got inspiring advice from the original actor, John Nettles, during their recent encounter.
In the forthcoming crime drama, the character portraying the detective from Jersey is depicted as being consumed by sorrow following the loss of his spouse, a tragedy that has led him to struggle with a severe drinking issue.
The series undergoes an extra alteration, transitioning from a weekly episodic structure where each installment presents a new standalone case, to a continuous storyline that extends across all six episodes in the inaugural season.
Without being overly protective of the changes that catapulted him to fame, Nettles granted Molony his approval during their latest encounter, both having starred on Bergerac (as reported by Metro).
Last week, I shared a meal with him, and he was truly delightful; he even complimented the first episode quite generously,” remarked Molony.
He concluded our meal with the remark, “Bergerac has been incredibly beneficial for me and my profession, and I truly wish the same success for you.” It’s such a heartwarming statement, and it underscores what a wonderful person he is.
Over a span of 14 years, Nettles excelled in the detective genre, portraying DCI Tom Barnaby on ITV’s Midsomer Murders. Later, he graced the screens again in the popular BBC remake of Poldark, set in a historical context.
Recently, Molony shared insights with TopMob Magazine about his latest adaptation of Bergerac, referring to it as a “more somber” interpretation compared to its original version.

The Brassic actor explained, “Playing a father feels more authentic for me because I am one in real life. Often during filming, I’d find myself reflecting on personal experiences from my family life to better connect with the character.
Instead of creating something new, I sought out events from the past that affected me personally. This wasn’t an attempt to mimic Nettles’ Bergerac; rather, I aimed to add my unique touch. I believe this interpretation carries a darker tone.
In addition to its main cast, the show features Zoë Wanamaker portraying Bergerac’s mother-in-law. She assumes responsibility for his teenage daughter during Bergerac’s turbulent downward spiral as a detective.
Molony noted: “Bergerac is utterly devastated by his wife’s passing, yet he needs to show courage for his daughter and prove to his fellow officers that he’s fit to return to duty. In truth, he might not be ready for work just yet.
