As a fan who has grown up with Dan Stevens gracing our screens with his exceptional acting skills, I must say, his recent antics have added a delightful layer to my admiration for him. The way he skillfully navigated the Marvel rumors, turning them into a playful game of cat and mouse, showcases his wit and charisma that extends beyond the silver screen.
Actor Dan Stevens has garnered significant recognition for his performances in series such as FX’s “Legion” and Hulu’s “Solar Opposites,” along with recent movies like the horror movie “Abigail” and “Godzilla vs. Kong: The New Empire.” Yet, it was an unconventional path to fame for Stevens in the late 2010s: whispers circulated that he was tied to a significant Marvel Studios production, which he himself helped fuel, despite it being nothing more than gossip at the time. In a recent interview, Stevens discusses why he chose to toy with fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe – and the consequences of such actions.
Previously, Dan Stevens had been filming the Netflix comedy “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga” in the UK during 2019. Coincidentally, Marvel Studios was also shooting “Eternals” at the same location and time. Stevens is friends with Brian Tyree Henry and Kumail Nanjiani from “Eternals,” and they all socialized in London one night; a photo of the three friends swiftly became popular online as Marvel enthusiasts speculated that the image might have accidentally revealed Stevens’ part in “Eternals.”
Speculation swirled that Stevens might be involved in supplying motion capture and voice work for Kro, the head of the Deviants – enemies genetically opposed to the Eternals. However, these rumors were unfounded. Instead, during press interviews for his personal projects, Stevens playfully fueled speculation by telling Collider’s Steve Weintraub a cryptic “Kro comment” when asked about the rumors. This light-hearted teasing only served to intensify the curiosity of Marvel fans and media personnel, who began inundating Stevens with questions about the Eternals and the rich comic book history behind it.
As a seasoned actor who has spent years honing my craft, I recently found myself in London, working on a project close to my heart – the Eurovision Song Contest. Little did I know that my good friends Brian Tyree Henry and Kamal Nanjani were also in town, filming the highly-anticipated movie ‘Eternals.’ It was a coincidence that brought us together for an unforgettable evening out for curry.
Afterward, Stevens conceded that the joke had spiraled out of control as his press conferences were flooded with Marvel Cinematic Universe queries.
In this situation, instead of saying “It did get kind of out of hand,” you could say, “Things started to spiral a bit.” And instead of “This has gotten way out of hand,” you might say, “But things have taken an unexpected turn.” The rest of the sentence remains unchanged: “But, yeah, all that happened is we went for a friendly dinner in London.” This paraphrase aims to maintain the original meaning while making it more natural and easier to read.
It was actually Bill Skarsgård from the IT movie and the upcoming The Crow reboot who gave some of the performances as Kro; so far, Dan Stevens, known for his roles in IT and as Charles Xavier’s troubled and powerful mutant son Legion, hasn’t landed a major Marvel role yet.
Marvel’s Eternals is now streaming on Disney+.
