Dance Moms star Kelly Hyland has hit a major achievement in her breast cancer journey.
In a video she posted on Instagram on August 20th, the 53-year-old woman announced that she had completed her initial treatment and was moving forward to the next phase of her battle. She wrote, “Today, I was able to ring the bell. This marks the end of my first round of treatments… Next up is surgery, followed by 20 rounds of radiation and 11 more treatments. I am ready for this challenge.”
Kelly, the mother of Brooke Hyland (age 26), Paige Hyland (age 23), and Josh Hyland (age 25), posted a heartwarming Boomerang clip showing Paige and Josh affectionately kissing her on the cheek.
The former reality star continued the celebrations with some dessert in another video an hour later, blowing out the candle on a piece of cheesecake. As she wrote, “Still celebrating.”
Initially, Kelly revealed her breast cancer detection in May, which followed the discovery of a lump in her breast towards the end of March. She specified that her formal diagnosis was an invasive carcinoma at stage 1, with a grade 3 severity.
In her exclusive interview with TopMob News, the mother of three explained, “The first warning sign was a significant decrease in my weight. This change was noticeable to others who would ask me about my diet strategies, yet I hadn’t made any adjustments to my daily routine that could account for it.”
Kelly, who has three children with ex-spouse Randy Hyland, has been taking turns having them accompany her to her appointments during her treatment. Additionally, the pair collaborated to design a personalized wig at Pittsburgh’s Serenity Wig Salon following her hair loss caused by chemotherapy.
Previously, Kelly shared with TopMob News that having both the salon and her friends present made her feel at ease and boosted her self-confidence. She mentioned that dealing with the idea of hair loss has been particularly challenging for her.
In her Instagram post on May 29, Brooke expressed confidence that cancer doesn’t realize the person it’s targeting. She affectionately conveyed, “I love you, mom.”

Eight months following her clean bill of health, former Dance Moms star Kelly Hyland shared in an exclusive conversation with TopMob News that she discovered a lump in her breast and scheduled a mammogram. Diagnosed this spring with a grade 3 invasive carcinoma, she expressed her surprise at how rapidly it had grown.
With her children Brooke Hyland, Josh Hyland, and Paige Hyland taking turns to accompany her to chemotherapy sessions, Kelly has a reliable support network set up. According to Josh, he believes his mother has the strength to overcome this challenge.
Kelly’s support system includes not just her three kids, but their entire Dance Moms family.
At present, she’s recording podcasts like ‘Back to the Barre’ with Chloé Lukasiak’s mom, Christi Lukasiak, and ‘Dear Dance Mom…’ featuring Maddie Ziegler, Kenzie Ziegler, Melissa Gisoni (their mother), Holly Frazier (Nia Sioux’s mom), and Jill Vertes (Kendall Vertes’ mom). She mentioned that all her former co-stars know about the current situation. “I feel fortunate to have such wonderful friends and a job that offers flexibility, allowing me to maintain some sense of normalcy amidst everything,” she said.

To minimize hair loss during treatments, Kelly has been employing the scalp cooling system Amma. As she put it, this device cools the scalp to a low temperature, causing the blood vessels to constrict and decrease the blood flow to the hair follicles. Consequently, fewer chemotherapy drugs reach the hair follicles, potentially reducing hair loss. Here’s hoping it proves effective!
Paige and Brooke were present during Kelly’s consultation at Pittsburgh’s Serenity Wig Salon. She expressed that having the salon and her companions by her side made her feel more at ease and self-assured, as the idea of hair loss had been a challenging prospect for her.
Kelly left Serenity Wig Salon with a sense of assurance about her decision. As she shared, they were customizing the wig I selected to perfectly fit my head, and they colored and styled it according to my preferences. To top it off, they even incorporated some baby hairs for a more authentic appearance.
Kelly’s children and her sister Carrie Matarazzo are sharing the duty of accompanying her to the treatments, as these sessions can extend beyond 10 hours. “The days are quite lengthy,” Kelly said, “and I don’t wish to burden that task onto a single individual.”
Kelly mentioned, “My kids help me navigate tough times,” she added. And they motivate her to persevere in striving for their common future.
She shared, “I continually remind myself that I must stay resilient for them. My aim is to regain my health and move past this challenge, so I can attend their weddings and hold their grandchildren, as well as be present for all the future milestones they’ll reach.”
According to Kelly, Brooke’s upcoming engagement to account manager Brian Thalman in May serves as a “wonderful diversion” for her, given that she is fully immersed in organizing the wedding.
She expressed her immense pride, saying, “I couldn’t be more proud of my daughters and son.” Despite the chaos they faced growing up, they’ve blossomed into thoughtful, playful, and mature individuals. I couldn’t ask for better children, and I’m incredibly thankful to have them by my side throughout all this and beyond!”
