Kelly Hyland is preparing to take another step in her health journey.
Brooke Hyland, who was on the show “Dance Moms,” shared that her mother, Kelly, will have an open-heart operation about two months following her completion of a second round of treatments for breast cancer.
The young woman stated on TikTok on June 24th that everyone had witnessed her complete her chemotherapy treatments for breast cancer. Regrettably, she received word shortly afterwards that she required open-heart surgery…I wanted to keep you informed about the situation so you understand what’s happening and can offer your prayers for her recovery.
Kelly, who is 54 years old and has children Josh Hyland (age 26) and Paige Hyland (age 24) with her former husband Randy Hyland, is getting ready for various treatment methods suggested by doctors regarding what Brooke described as a “leaking” heart condition.
She had been scheduled for surgery on Friday, but now she needs to go in a day earlier instead. She mentioned that the doctors are planning to perform the operation robotically if possible, but if they can’t reach her heart with that method, they will have to resort to traditional surgery. This prospect is making her very scared. Right now, her heart is leaking.
Brooke, known for being on ‘Dance Moms’ with her mother and sister from 2011 to 2014, later shared insights about the medical situation concerning Kelly (her family member).
She’s received diverse views from various doctors. Some believe her valve issue might have been present since childhood due to improper closure, while others suggest it could be a side effect of her cancer, possibly caused by a tear. She’s unsure herself. Fortunately, she’s undergoing treatment for this condition. It turned out that some scans taken for her cancer diagnosis also revealed this issue, which is fortunate.
Later on, Brooke shared a video where she visited the shopping mall nearby to purchase a custom-made teddy bear for her mother at Build-a-Bear Workshop.
In the video, she says, “My mom is having open-heart surgery soon. I thought about getting her a small gift, so we should go find one.” However, her surgery has been rescheduled multiple times and will now take place on a day when I won’t be around. I was thinking a talking teddy bear could be nice because it can play my voice, so when she hugs it, I could essentially talk to her.
In May 2024, Kelly initially disclosed her cancer diagnosis, revealing some of the changes she had to implement during her struggle against the illness.
As a lifestyle expert, I often find myself grappling with the notion of accepting assistance from those around me. Being a self-reliant individual, I’m accustomed to assuming the role of caretaker – be it for myself or others. However, as a mother, I’ve had to learn to let go of that independence and allow others to step in when needed.
Kelly commented, “I dislike the sensation of being an annoyance or burden to anyone. Yet, it’s becoming clear that my journey is a long and challenging one. Consequently, I must learn to accept assistance from others since I am incredibly fortunate to have people who are willing to care for me during this difficult period.
Brooke also shared how she planned to be there to support Kelly during the tough year ahead.
She expressed to TopMob that she’s incredibly strong and always ready to support those she cares about without a second thought. Despite wanting more than anything to alleviate her pain and free her from this difficult predicament, all I could do was offer my presence – just as she’s been there for me throughout my life.

Eight months following a clean bill of health, former star of Dance Moms, Kelly Hyland, disclosed in an exclusive chat with TopMob News, “I discovered a lump in my breast and scheduled a mammogram.” Diagnosed this spring with invasive carcinoma grade 3, she admitted, “I was taken aback to find it had grown so rapidly.
With her children Brooke Hyland, Josh Hyland, and Paide Hyland taking turns to attend her chemotherapy sessions, Kelly has a reliable support group ready. According to Josh, he believes his mother has the strength to overcome this challenge.
Kelly’s support system includes not just her three kids, but their entire Dance Moms family.
At present, she’s recording her podcasts titled “_Back to the Barre_” with Chloé Lukasiak’s mom Christi Lukasiak and “_Dear Dance Mom…_” featuring Maddie Ziegler, Kenzie Ziegler, Melissa Gisoni (their mom), Holly Frazier (Nia Sioux’s mom), and Jill Vertes (Kendall Vertes’ mom). She mentioned that all her former co-stars are informed about the current situation. She feels fortunate to have such wonderful friends and a job that offers flexibility, allowing her to maintain some sense of normalcy amidst everything.
Right now, Kelly is undergoing her second out of a total of six rounds of chemotherapy. After these treatments, she plans to have surgery and radiation therapy. She mentioned that there are 11 more chemotherapy sessions waiting for her, which she described as a lengthy road ahead for her.
To keep her hair intact during treatments, Kelly has been employing the scalp cooling system Amma. As she put it, this cap chills the scalp to a low temperature, causing the blood vessels to constrict and decrease the blood flow to the hair follicles. In doing so, fewer chemotherapy drugs reach the hair follicles, potentially reducing hair loss. Here’s to it being effective!
Paige and Brooke accompanied Kelly during her visit to Pittsburgh’s Serenity Wig Salon for her appointment. She expressed that having both the salon and her companions by her side made her feel more at ease and boosted her self-confidence, as the idea of losing her hair has been a challenging prospect for her.
Kelly left Serenity Wig Salon feeling assured about her decision. She shared that they were customizing the wig she selected to perfectly fit her head, coloring and styling it according to her preferences. Additionally, they included some tiny hairs to give the appearance a more lifelike touch.
Kelly’s children and her sister, Carrie Matarazzo, are alternating in going with her to the treatments, which can stretch beyond 10 hours. As she put it, “These days can be quite lengthy, so I don’t want to burden that task onto a single individual.
Kelly remarked that her kids help her navigate tough times, and they motivate her to continue striving for the future they share together.
She clarified, “I constantly remind myself that I have to stay strong for them. My goal is to regain my health and move past this difficult phase, so I can attend their weddings, embrace their future generations, and be present for each new milestone they reach.
Brooke’s upcoming wedding with account manager Brian Thalman in May is serving as a wonderful diversion, mentioned Kelly, who is fully immersed in the wedding preparations.
She expressed her immense pride, stating, “I couldn’t be more proud of my daughters and son.” Despite the chaos they’ve encountered growing up, they’ve blossomed into thoughtful, joyful, and mature individuals. I could not ask for better children, and I am incredibly grateful to have them supporting me through everything and beyond!
