Dancing on Ice 2026: The Future Uncertain?

The latest winners of Dancing On Ice 2025 have been announced.

On Sunday, the 9th of March, Sam Aston from Coronation Street and his skating partner Molly Lanaghan triumphed in a competition, outscoring Michaela Strachan (BBC Springwatch presenter) and ex-footballer Anton Ferdinand to win the trophy.

At the grand finale, Aston and Lanaghan danced to the iconic tune of The Pink Panther, and judge Christopher Dean expressed his admiration by saying, “I’m genuinely pleased with your performance.

Following Ferdinand’s defeat in the public poll, Aston and Strachan danced the famous Bolero routine – the same one Torvill and Dean showcased during the 1984 Olympic Games.

Prior to the final announcement, Aston expressed that his experience on the competition had been an extraordinary and wild ride.

But due to rumors suggesting the cancellation of the skating show, viewers may be curious if it will return in 2026. Here is what we currently know about the show’s potential future.

Will there be a Dancing on Ice 2026 season?

It’s possible that the show “Dancing on Ice” might get canceled due to decreasing audience interest and escalating production expenses, which are increasingly hard to defend as cost-effective.

This year’s season opening drew approximately 700,000 less attendees than last year, and about 6 million fewer than it did two decades ago.

As reported by The Sun, there’s a possibility that the series may be discontinued temporarily, only to return again at some point in the future – much like how it was taken off the air in 2014 following the Season 9 finale and brought back four years later.

The publication was informed by a source: “The viewership numbers are significantly lower compared to before, yet nearly 3 million people tuned in for the launch event. Admittedly, the format appears worn out, and they no longer attract the high-profile stars they used to.

“Changes are needed and it’s likely it’ll be rested and given a ‘new lease of life’.”

According to the report, the fate of the show lies in the discussions following last night’s final episode. It’s a costly production known as “Dancing on Ice,” and there are doubts about whether ITV is receiving commensurate value for their investment.

A representative from ITV stated: “Our Dancing on Ice crew is currently focusing all their efforts on the highly anticipated series finale airing this coming Sunday, so no decisions have been made yet.

According to a source, last week it was expressed that Dancing on Ice might be coming to an end. Despite its long-standing popularity of almost 20 years and a devoted fanbase who adore it, the reality is that the viewership isn’t sufficient anymore.

We require more people attending, however, the ratings have fallen so significantly that it’s challenging to justify the expense.

2024 saw uncertainty about the show’s continuation as well, following the retirement announcement and hint at a farewell performance by Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean on the ice show.

Last night at the climactic ice show, they skated to signify the conclusion of a remarkable 50-year professional journey.

Dean expressed deep feelings as he stated, ‘It’s incredibly emotional for us.’ He continued, ‘We’ve been on an amazing journey – spanning across 17 series and more than 80 shows. However, tonight will be our final performance,’ he added. ‘Performing one last time feels like another Olympics for us.’
