Dandadan Animators Talk Creating Episode 7’s Heartbreaking Sequence (And How It Changed From The Manga)

As a dedicated fan of anime and a connoisseur of heart-wrenching tales, I must say that the seventh episode of Dandadan has left me utterly spellbound. The creators at Science SARU have truly outdone themselves with this emotional rollercoaster, delving deep into the backstory of Acrobat Silky and giving us a glimpse into her tragic past.

In the anime series Dandadan, which revolves around a young boy inhabited by the “Turbo Granny” spirit and a humorous supernatural world, the latest episode has been tugging at heartstrings. The seventh installment delves into the backstory of the antagonist Acrobat Silky, revealing her history that invites viewers to understand her struggles and feel compassion for the trials she endured. In a recent conversation, the animators at Science SARU shared insights on crafting this emotional scene, noting that their approach differed from the original manga conceptualized by creator Yukinobu Tatsu.

What’s the backstory of Acrobat Silky, the character who later became a terrifying specter? Originally, she was an ordinary mother struggling to provide for herself and her daughter. During her daily life, it seems she borrowed money from a pair of criminals to ensure her daughter had some treats. However, when these gangsters demanded their money back, they caused severe harm to the future Acrobat and abducted her daughter. The injuries sustained by the mother led to her death, leaving her unable to find her daughter. As a result, she became the vengeful ghost we see today. Despite her evil deeds, Acrobat Silky’s past resonated with anime viewers due to their empathy for her situation.

Science SARU Animators Talk Acrobat Silky’s Origin

Lately, Anime News Network interviewed Shuto Enomoto, an animator on the series ‘Dandadan’, who has also worked on notable shows like ‘Heavenly Delusion’ and ‘Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken’. In the interview, Enomoto talked about alterations made to the anime’s storyline compared to the manga, stating that “the memory sequence involving Acro-Silky in episode 7 is actually quite brief in the original manga. Director Fuga Yamashiro significantly expanded it by making Acro-Silky the central character of the episode. I sketched out the storyboard based on director Yamashiro’s ideas, but truthfully, some of them were challenging to implement, and I had doubts about whether I could finish it.

As a gamer, I can share my perspective on how Enomoto brought Acrobat Silky to life: “I aimed to portray a fight where it seems like Acro-Silky is trapped within her own hair. This battle between her, Momo, and Okarun posed a challenge, so I pondered over the significance of their clash. For episode 7, I spent hours sketching out storyboards and contemplating which animators would best capture the essence of our beloved character. The climax for viewers will undoubtedly be the heart-wrenching moment between Aira and Acro-Silky, where she vows, ‘I won’t forget. I swear.’ The lingering emotions from this scene remain strong even after the credits have rolled.

Dandadan’s First Season Splash

It’s said that the anime “Dandadan” is set to have a total of twelve episodes in its first season, implying that fans are nearly done with the initial unfolding of Momo and Okarun’s tale. Although no confirmation has been made about a second season, if Science SARU decides to continue the TV series, they will have a wealth of material to draw from in the form of over one hundred chapters written by Yukinobu Tatsu for the manga. This could potentially mean that several more seasons lie ahead for this supernatural shonen series.
