Dandadan Creator Admits He's Very Inspired by Junji Ito, Ultraman

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for anime that knows no bounds, I can confidently say that the upcoming series Dandadan has piqued my interest like no other. With Science Saru at the helm and an intriguing blend of horror and comedy on offer, this show is shaping up to be a game-changer.

Dandadan” is gearing up to be one of the most anticipated anime releases this year, thanks to Science Saru’s involvement. The series promises to introduce a new crowd to the world of the supernatural, with elements ranging from ghosts to aliens. With its unique mix of horror and humor, “Dandadan” is set to captivate viewers. In a recent interview, creator Yukinobu Tatsu revealed that his manga was inspired by tales from Junji Ito and Ultraman.

Absolutely correct! It’s worth noting that the chilling storyline of Dandadan can be attributed to Junji Ito, a master of horror, and Ultraman. I strongly recommend you pay your respects to these two creative minds without delay.

In a recent interview, Tatsu opened up about his inspirations while sitting in Japan, and among those, he mentioned the works of Junji Ito as being a reference point for him in creating Dandadan.

“I ponder, ‘What makes this sketch unsettling? The detail and abundance of lines give it an eerie feel, yet there are parts that provoke laughter, making me wonder if it’s intended as a jest. It seems to me that fear and humor can coexist.”

Later on, Tatsu mentioned that he draws inspiration from Ultraman when creating the aliens and monsters for Dandada. “I’ve always been fond of Narita Toru, who is particularly recognized for his work on Ultraman. As a kid during summer breaks, I used to watch Ultraman reruns and thought it was just another superhero story. However, as I grew older and revisited Toru’s designs, I found… an uncanny, eerie quality that truly appeals to me.”

The Inspiration Behind Dandadan

In the world of manga, Dandadan isn’t a standalone tale. Tatsu, one of its characters, draws inspiration from previous hits like Ultraman and Junji Ito. If you haven’t dived into the Dandadan series yet, now is your chance! The anime adaptation will debut this fall. You can find it on the Shonen Jump app for a closer look at the story. In an unexpected turn of events, Momo Ayase befriends her school’s enthusiast of extraterrestrial life, whom she humorously dubs “Okarun” due to his name being considered inappropriate for spoken conversation. While Momo is a believer in the supernatural, she dismisses aliens as mere nonsense. On the other hand, Okarun strongly believes in the existence of aliens while doubting spirits. To settle their differences, they embark on separate journeys: Momo to an alleged UFO hotspot and Okarun to a supposedly haunted tunnel. The ensuing story is a charming exploration of youthful romance…and rather peculiar extra-terrestrial beings and spirits!
