Dandadan Finale Pays Hilarious Homage to This Iconic Sports Anime

As an avid fan of anime who has witnessed the evolution of the genre over the past few decades, I must admit that the recent scene from Dandadan‘s anime left me in stitches. The nostalgic reference to Slam Dunk, a classic sports anime from my childhood, coupled with the humorous situation unfolding before our eyes, was nothing short of delightful. It’s always a treat to see voice actors showing their love for their craft by subtly incorporating references to other works they’ve been involved in.

This week, I’m witnessing the exciting conclusion of Dandadan’s first season. Momo, Okarun, and Jiji embark on a fresh adventure. The finale offers a side-splitting moment when Okarun, grappling with complex feelings due to discovering Jiji was Momo’s first love, lashes out in jest. In an unexpected turn of events, he bursts into the theme song from the iconic basketball anime, Slam Dunk. What makes this moment even funnier is how Jiji seizes the chance to join in, leaving Momo utterly perplexed in the midst of it all.

Originating in 1993, this sports anime is renowned as one of the most iconic in history. The storyline is based on Chapter 31 of the manga, making it a faithful adaptation rather than an original anime creation. Aleks Le, the voice actor for Jiji, lends his talent to Kaede Rukawa in the English version of the 2022 movie “The First Slam Dunk.” The film encompasses chapters 223 to 276 from the manga and incorporates additional scenes exclusive to the anime. On platform X (formerly known as Twitter), Le casually drops a reference to “Slam Dunk.

What’s Next in Dandadan’s Anime?

Due to her wager with Seiko, Momo finds herself needing to expel the ghost residing within Jiji’s home if she hopes for a fresh school uniform. However, she quickly realizes that the house poses a greater peril than she initially anticipated. The children now face a significant danger, which will be further explored in Dandadan Season 2. Excitingly, the sequel was officially announced along with a new promotional image following the end of season one. Set to air in July 2025, the second season has yet to release an official trailer. Picking up right where it ended, the upcoming season will continue the tale.

The house hides a dark secret in a hidden room filled with talismans and howling screams. However, while Okarun and Jiji find the hidden room, Momo gets in trouble with the Kito Family. The family runs things around the village and they definitely mean to cause trouble with the way they’re targeting Momo. The upcoming season will resolve the mystery of the cursed house. It will most likely adapt the manga’s Cursed House and Evil Eye arcs.
