For fifty years, “Jaws” has sent chills down spines and established itself as a classic summer movie. More recent additions to this genre include “The Shallows,” “47 Metres Down,” “The Meg,” and now “Dangerous Animals.” What sets this film apart is its unique take on shark attacks, and that twist is the compelling performance of Jai Courtney as Tucker, a witty and likable captain who guides tourists to swim with sharks.
Instead of describing it as a shark cage experience, imagine this scenario: Tucker isn’t just a regular diver; he’s a serial killer who drugs tourists, attaches them to a harness, and lowers them into the ocean for the sharks to attack while he records the gruesome event. Of course, such a thing would happen! It’s an unsettling scene that shares some elements with the extreme horror films of the early 2000s, often referred to as “torture porn.”
In addition, there’s a chilling sequence where Tucker casually eats dinner while watching a recording of one of his female victims being devoured – a scene reminiscent of Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, in which Henry watches a tape of a family he murdered. In this case as in the original, we find ourselves unwillingly drawn into the macabre spectacle, becoming complicit in enjoying the grisly horror just like the killer himself.
However, Zephyr (Hassie Harrison), a free spirit who dwells in her van and cherishes the Australian waves, enters the story. She forms an alliance with Moses (Josh Heuston) when he needs help jump-starting his car with a dead battery after they connect. Yet, it’s Zephyr who departs the next day without any intention of settling down. This scenario repeats itself when Tucker spots her in her camper van early one morning as she waits for the perfect surf. This encounter initiates a playful game of cat and mouse between Zephyr and Tucker, taking place on Tucker’s boat out at sea amidst sharks.
Despite the questionable credibility that Tucker has been performing such activities for years without ever being apprehended by authorities, this film offers plenty of entertainment value. It’s quite possible that this will be the surprise blockbuster of the summer season.
