Daniel Casey Teases Epic Return to Midsomer Murders After 20 Years!

Daniel Casey expresses interest in rejoining the next season of Midsomer Murders, over two decades since his initial exit.

From 1997 to 2003, the actor portrayed the original sidekick, Sergeant Gavin Troy. He left the show when his character was advanced to the rank of Detective Inspector and relocated to Middlesbrough.

From 2001 until 2011, DCI Tom Barnaby (portrayed by John Nettles) continued in the show alongside several secondary sergeants. Then, in 2011, he retired and was succeeded by his on-screen younger cousin, John Barnaby, who is played by Neil Dudgeon.

Currently, as the 25th season is being filmed, Casey has expressed his willingness to make a guest appearance.

On one occasion, I visited again when Cully tied the knot, and it was simply fantastic. The grand entrance I made, swooping down from the road only to collide with the trees before exiting the wreckage, was absolutely thrilling. Standing there amidst the chaos, I found John waiting for me, making the scene all the more remarkable.

“So yeah, never say never, that would be a lovely idea wouldn’t it!”

He added: “Neil Dudgeon is such a lovely fella and does such a beautiful job.”

Yet, it’s not mandatory for Casey to reappear as Troy, given that he’s planning to delve once more into the realm of Midsomer come fall.

In October, the actor is set to portray the character of Tom Barnaby (previously played by John Nettles) in a new touring adaptation of ‘The Killings at Badger’s Drift’.

As he worked through it and prepared, Casey remarked that the entire experience felt “extremely nostalgic” and evoked many recollections from his days on the program.

“It was such a fantastic time in my early career and John and I spent so much time together.

As I welcomed my firstborn into the world, I happened to be residing with John at the time. Over the ensuing years, our bond has flourished into a beautiful friendship, one that I hold dear.

Reflecting on his time in the show, Casey found himself captivated by the multitude of outstanding actors he collaborated with. Orlando Bloom, who later became famous for playing Legolas, graced our set before departing, and Tobias Menzies, who turned up even in the very first episode, was also part of this talented ensemble. And let me tell you, Rosalie Crutchley, she was simply remarkable.

For about six to seven years, it seemed as if I was attending an ongoing masterclass with extraordinary individuals from television, cinema, and stage performance. Every day was enlightening, like learning directly from the best in their fields.

When queried about the reason for the show’s lasting impact and reputation, he summarized his thoughts as follows: “Its global appeal stems from an ‘Englishness’ that foreigners envision as our everyday life – a picture-perfect existence in quaint villages filled with intrigue and secrets lurking behind every lace curtain.

Being a part of it since the beginning is an honor, but returning to it now makes that experience even more gratifying.

From October 2025 through April 2026, the stage adaptation of “Midsomer Murders: The Killings at Badger’s Drift” will travel across the UK. Secure your tickets at ATG Tickets!
