Daniel Craig will no longer star in the upcoming DC film “Sgt. Rock,” but the production at Warner Bros. appears to be moving forward. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the studio is planning to shoot the movie this summer and is currently looking for someone to replace Craig. Jeremy Allen White, known for his role in “The Bear,” could potentially lead the film, though no clear front-runner has been identified yet. At present, there’s no scheduled release date for “Sgt. Rock,” directed by Luca Guadagnino.
Regarding Craig, there’s no clear reason given for him departing from “Sgt. Rock.” It has been suggested by some insiders that scheduling conflicts might have been the cause, as his schedule apparently clashed with that of his wife, actress Rachel Weisz. Another theory is that he chose to step down because the movie “Queer,” a project he previously worked on with Guadagnino, did not perform well financially or in awards ceremonies.
News surfaced in November 2024 about Craig’s association with “Sgt. Rock,” a character created back in 1959 for DC Comics’ “Our Army at War” #83. Interestingly, the script for this upcoming movie is being written by Justin Kuritzkes, who has previously worked on Guadagnino’s “Challengers” and “Queer.” Although Sgt. Rock has been around for a while, he isn’t as well-known within the DC Comics universe compared to other characters. Following the announcement of the movie, James Gunn, one of the co-heads at DC Studios, addressed criticisms by stating that the DC Universe is exploring less mainstream or “niche” characters.
For decades, Hollywood has been striving to bring a Sgt. Rock movie to life. An endeavor in the 1980s that reunited Arnold Schwarzenegger with his Predator director, John McTiernan, did not materialize. A subsequent effort involving Bruce Willis and director Guy Ritchie disintegrated when Ritchie shifted focus towards Sherlock Holmes, leaving the Sgt. Rock project behind.
The departure of Craig from the cast of Sgt. Rock might be a minor hiccup, as indicated by the fact that the film’s creative team remains in place and Warner Bros. is planning to start production later this year. This indicates that the studio is eager to find a replacement leading man quickly, suggesting that Sgt. Rock is a priority for them. If the search for a new actor takes too long, it could potentially lead to delays in the project, which might affect other plans, such as Guadagnino’s upcoming adaptation of American Psycho. However, it appears that the filmmakers are determined to get the DC film into production without any significant delays.
Although it’s clear that Warner Bros. is striving to select the ideal actor for the lead role in Sgt. Rock, it’s unfortunate that Daniel Craig has decided to part ways with the project. Watching his extraordinary blend of action skills and dramatic talent, as showcased by his iconic James Bond character, brought to life within a comic book adaptation focusing on the emotional consequences of war for soldiers, would have been truly captivating. Sgt. Rock has the potential to become an exceptional and distinctive addition to the DC Universe, and Craig would have undoubtedly excelled in this role. Finding a suitable replacement will be no small feat, and let’s hope that the chosen actor—either White or another talented individual—will make a lasting impact on the character.
