Daredevil: Born Again Could Have Been a Multiverse Reset with Variants

The “Daredevil: Born Again” series delves deep into the raw, realistic tale of Matt Murdock as he clashes with Wilson Fisk, now Mayor of New York City, further exploring the narrative from the original Netflix “Daredevil” show. However, the Disney+ series almost took a completely different turn. Actor Charlie Cox has disclosed that an early draft of “Daredevil: Born Again” veered towards the supernatural, incorporating elements from the MCU’s multiverse and introducing “variants” of Matt Murdock, Foggy Nelson, and Karen Page.

Reflecting on my chat at Deadline’s Crew Call podcast, I shared some intriguing insights into the early concepts for Daredevil: Born Again. Originally, Marvel envisioned it as a fresh start, drawing inspiration from the sci-fi fantasy elements seen in Loki, which takes us on an exhilarating adventure through space and time. The narrative would have centered around a parallel iteration of Hell’s Kitchen heroes coexisting within our world, distinct from the Netflix series.

The original team had an intention to include Vincent [D’Onofrio] and me in the new project. However, they wanted to ensure the audience who hadn’t seen the Netflix show wouldn’t feel alienated. They aimed for a sort of restart, or reboot, if you will. So, there was discussion about it being somewhat similar, but not exactly the same – like a variant or alternate version – though we never called it that explicitly. In the Loki series, we refer to these variants; this new version could be seen as an analogous concept, existing in the same universe.
