Ever since Disney revealed their plans for a revival of Daredevil on Disney+, fans have wondered if this meant that the other Netflix Marvel characters might also re-enter the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Initially, Daredevil was the pioneer among the Netflix Marvel shows, paving the way for an additional 5 New York-based superhero series: Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher, and The Defenders. The Defenders served as the television equivalent of a street-level Avengers team, uniting Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist to combat a common foe. Watching these heroes join forces was every bit as thrilling as witnessing the Avengers come together after multiple films. However, despite fan hopes, Marvel and Disney have been firm: the other Defenders will not be appearing on Disney+ or making appearances in Daredevil’s upcoming series, Daredevil: Born Again.
With the conclusion of the first season of “Born Again”, it’s high time for the Defenders to join forces once more in season 2.
Warning! This article contains spoilers for the season finale of Daredevil: Born Again.
Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Has Set A Perfect Stage for The Defenders
It’s understandable that Disney chose not to incorporate any Netflix-era heroes into the first season of Born Again, as the focus was on Matt Murdock and his introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Including the Defenders would have felt incongruous with the series’ mood and narrative, and could be perceived as fan service. Now that we’ve seen the entire first season, it’s clear how ill-fitting it would have been to include one of those characters; a cameo might have detracted from the importance of the story centered around Matt Murdock’s personal journey. However, the Season 1 finale not only hints at but fully prepares for Jessica, Luke, and Danny to enter the MCU in future seasons.
When Matt dons his Daredevil costume again following nine episodes, he finds himself squarely in a life-or-death conflict on the darkened streets of New York City, pursued by Fisk’s crooked police unit called the Anti-Vigilante Task Force. As the battle proves to be one he cannot win alone, especially under Fisk’s iron rule, Matt ventures into Josie’s bar where several cops and detectives are drowning their sorrows from the chaotic night. Among them sits Cherry, former Police Commissioner and Matt’s friend, who appears to have assembled the honest officers – those he believed could be relied upon and were willing to stand up against Fisk – at this very bar, knowing that Matt would eventually appear here.
The officers seem taken aback by Daredevil’s unexpected emergence, yet Matt delivers a passionate speech, urging them to persist in their resistance and rebellion. Notably, he emphasizes the importance of uniting, a point that caught my attention. When Matt Murdock discusses unity, there is only one group he was ever associated with and only one he trusts implicitly when it comes to vigilantes: the Defenders.
The Defenders Can Now Be More Than A Cameo
In Manhattan, where Luke, Jessica, and Danny reside and act as vigilantes, Kingpin’s aggressive actions such as enforcing martial law, creating a police state, and empowering the Anti-Vigilante Task Force pose a significant risk to them. Allying with Matt and his team of dedicated cops could provide them an opportunity to resist Fisk not just for the sake of vigilantes, but also for the oppressed citizens of New York. Given Luke Cage’s indestructible nature, he would prove to be a formidable adversary for the Anti-Vigilante Task Force. Moreover, with Luke Cage now holding the reins as Harlem’s crime boss in Season 2, his storyline will undoubtedly intertwine intriguingly with Fisk’s new role as Mayor.
As a movie enthusiast who’s recently dived into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), I can’t help but suggest an intriguing prospect for the upcoming season 2 of “Born Again”: Introducing the Defenders! The seamless inclusion of these characters, namely Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist, would provide a fantastic opportunity to acclimate MCU fans who missed out on the Netflix shows to these captivating characters. They could join Matt’s quest for justice, making their entrance feel organic and engaging.
Moreover, this collaboration might serve as a stepping stone for each of them to star in their own rebooted series, potentially titled “Daredevil: Born Again.” This approach would not only enrich the “Born Again” narrative but also pave the way for standalone adventures featuring these beloved characters. It’s a win-win situation that promises exciting developments for both longtime fans and newcomers alike!
Reintroducing the Defenders wouldn’t merely be fan service; it would serve a larger narrative involving a complex situation that necessitates assistance, especially superpowered help. Given Matt’s past with the other three, their established connection will effortlessly fit into the storyline, much like how Frank’s did. The battle for New York’s soul won’t be complete without the combined efforts of all New York’s vigilantes, making a significant impact in the process.
