Those concerned that Marvel Studio’s new ‘Daredevil’ series might tone down on the violence compared to the Netflix show can relax. In fact, ‘Daredevil: Born Again‘ appears to be just as dark, if not darker, and it seems the MCU version of Daredevil will escalate the level of violence even further.
In an interview with Empire Magazine for their latest issue, I, as a devoted cinema enthusiast, had the pleasure of hearing directly from Daredevil: Born Again’s mastermind, Dario Scardapane, about the intense and brutal nature that will define this upcoming Marvel series.
He clarified that the amount of violence in this Marvel/Disney series is exceptionally high compared to other shows of its kind. “I can’t think of any other content that comes close,” he added. “There’s a particular scene in it that is utterly insane, far surpassing anything Netflix has produced.
Vincent D’Onofrio, one of the stars, commented that there could have been a possibility that if the show continued, we might end up somewhere similar. However, he noted that we’ve delved deeper into realms of mystery, intensity, and harshness instead.
Scardapane further discussed the intricate dynamic between Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk, explaining how their ongoing conflict adds an extra layer of suspense to the overall series.
In a different phrasing, Scardapane stated, “Typically, each season concludes with them brutally fighting and Kingpin being imprisoned, only to reappear later. However, I chose not to follow that pattern because this relationship dynamic is significantly more suspenseful. There’s a crucial scene in the first episode that sets everything up, and for the next eight episodes, we continuously challenge and test their interactions.
It’s not the first time Marvel fans have heard a similar story about Daredevil: Born Again, which has led to growing anticipation. Actor Charlie Cox, who stars in it, has stated that this version is significantly darker than the two Daredevil shows he has previously worked on.
In his conversation with EW, Cox emphasized that the key point of discussion was the show’s unique success and its attraction to a particular audience due to its dark and menacing elements. He and Vincent shared the belief that losing these characteristics could potentially jeopardize the program’s distinct identity. Consequently, they made efforts to ensure the show catered primarily to an older demographic rather than diluting it for a broader audience. In some aspects, it might even be darker than previous work they’ve produced.
Apart from Cox and D’Onofrio, the Daredevil: Born Again series also includes familiar faces like Jon Bernthal, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, and Wilson Bethel from the original Daredevil cast. This 18-episode series is set to premiere on Disney+ starting Tuesday, March 4th.
