Daredevil: Born Again Just Introduced Its Creepiest Villain Yet

The first season of “Daredevil: Reborn” on Disney+ will introduce the ominous villain Muse, hints suggest he may have been previously introduced in the second episode. The eagerly awaited series, consisting of its first two episodes now streaming, revives beloved characters from the Netflix era like Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock and Vincent D’Onofrio. Alongside these familiar faces, the show also presents a host of new characters, such as Matt’s love interest, psychiatrist Dr. Heather Glenn (Margarita Levieva). Regrettably for Matt, it appears his most unsettling adversary to date may be linked with his newest love interest.

WARNING: Spoilers below for Daredevil: Born Again Episodes 1 & 2

After the heartbreaking demise of his friend and legal partner Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) in the first episode, Matt Murdock decides to stop being Daredevil. A year later, Matt is trying to rebuild his life with a new romantic partner, Heather. She is a successful psychiatrist who has written books on trauma recovery and published several of them. In Episode 2, we see Heather hosting a book signing event where she meets an unidentified young man portrayed by Hunter Doohan. Although the interaction is brief, it suggests ominous intentions from this character.

As a film critic, I found myself captivated by Doohan’s performance in this scene, radiating an unsettling intensity as he confides in Heather that she inspires him. His urgent plea for her aid instilled an immediate sense of discomfort, making his presence all the more enigmatic. The lengthy focus on this seemingly trivial encounter hints at a larger role for this character in upcoming episodes, perhaps even a formidable one given Muse’s anticipated appearance. Could this enigmatic young man be our new antagonist? Stay tuned to find out!

As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but notice how Doohan’s unsettling portrayal mirrors Muse’s chilling comic book persona. It’s fascinating how the writers have tied this potential antagonist to Matt’s new love interest, Heather, instantly making the story personal and compelling enough to steer the plot forward. Given that Matt has given up his vigilante life post Foggy’s demise, any danger lurking near someone he cares deeply about could be the exact push he needs to reembrace the costume he had discarded. So, the enigmatic character’s apparent obsession with Heather could serve as a common thread throughout the series, leading us towards an epic showdown that will test Matt’s commitment to upholding justice within the law alone.

Who Is Muse in Marvel Comics?

Muse doesn’t typically match up with Daredevil’s well-known group of adversaries, as a more recent introduction dating back to Charles Soule and Ron Garney’s notable series starting from issue #11 (Volume 5) in 2016. Unlike antagonists driven by power or vengeance, Muse is characterized by a troubled artistic mindset that views violence and murder as creative outlets. Physically unique with abnormally white skin and black eyes, this character boasts metahuman traits such as superhuman speed and stealth skills that test even Daredevil’s heightened senses.

For the purpose of adapting the story, Muse’s comic book debut happened alongside the “Mayor Fisk” narrative. In this plotline, Wilson Fisk exploited increasing public disapproval towards vigilantes to further his political career. The villain’s alarming criminal activities unintentionally heightened public fear, providing a favorable environment for Fisk’s political aspirations. This mirrors the storytelling style of “Born Again“, which also presents Wilson Fisk’s political ambitions as a background to more pressing dangers.

New episodes of Daredevil: Born Again premiere Tuesdays on Disney+.

Could it be that the enigmatic individual is actually Muse? Could the upcoming series “Daredevil: Born Again” leverage Muse’s criminal activities to bolster Wilson Fisk’s political influence? Feel free to share your thoughts below!
