Daredevil: Born Again Spoiler – Is Foggy Nelson Alive? Fan Theory Explodes!

[Caution: This discussion reveals spoilers for Daredevil: Born Again season 1 episode 1.] Matt Murdock kept reminding himself that he was still alive while in prison, as his heightened senses heard his friend and lawyer Foggy Nelson being brutally murdered in the pages of issue #82 of the 2006 Daredevil comic. The story arc by Brian Michael Bendis concluded with the Man Without Fear behind bars alongside his arch-enemy, Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin of Crime. The six-part “The Devil in Cell-Block D,” penned by Ed Brubaker, began with the unexpected death of a character who had been present since the very first issue of the comic series in 1964.

In the initial moments of “Daredevil: Born Again”, it was just as surprising when Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson), the lawyer character, met his untimely end. This happened during a casual outing with Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) and Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll). The assassin known as Bullseye (Wilson Bethel) was responsible for Foggy’s death, shooting him point-blank. As Daredevil, Matt confronted Bullseye in a fight, while hearing the faint beats of Foggy’s slowing heart. Once Foggy’s heart stopped beating completely, Matt, as Daredevil, threw Bullseye off a roof.

In a surprising twist, Bullseye miraculously survived his fall from a four-story building, while Foggy’s fate remains uncertain. The creators of Daredevil hint that Foggy’s death might not be as definitive as it seems, drawing inspiration from Michael Lark’s panels in Daredevil #82 for the “Heaven’s Half Hour” episode of Born Again. Is there a possibility that Foggy could still be alive? Only time will tell.

Spectators were taken aback by the on-screen demise of Foggy, an event that led Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil, to exchange his horned cowl for a braille memorial program during Foggy’s off-screen funeral. It appears that Foggy Nelson has met his end and been laid to rest, but this is not the case in the comic books where he was brought back to life.

In Brubaker’s run, the “Devil in Cell-Block D” storyline on Daredevil comic series ended with the revelation that Foggy, who had been stabbed in prison and left for dead, miraculously survived. Although Matt, who was arrested by the FBI following the exposure of his alleged identity as Daredevil, believed Foggy to have died from his wounds, it was later disclosed that Foggy was revived en route to the hospital in an ambulance. Remarkably, Matt, still handcuffed due to his arrest, attended Foggy’s funeral.

However, issue #88 of “Daredevil” unmasked a hidden fact: top FBI officials had Foggy Nelson recuperating from his wounds in protective custody, disguised as “Everett Williams.” This alias was a tribute to Bill Everett, one of the series’ co-creators whose birth name was William Blake Everett.

As Foggy Nelson was marked by Daredevil’s adversaries for elimination, I found myself abruptly extracted from the operating room and thrust into the witness relocation program. In an effort to warn Ben Urich at The Daily Bugle and alert Matt Murdock, who had managed to break out of prison with the aid of the Punisher and was tracking down Foggy’s assassin overseas, I attempted to reach out. However, the authorities secreted me away in a suburban safehouse. It turns out that Vanessa Fisk, the terminally ill wife of the Kingpin, orchestrated the targeting of Foggy Nelson. In Daredevil #92 by Brubaker and Lark, it was disclosed that Vanessa Fisk had staged Foggy’s death and utilized her FBI connections to place him in witness protection with the hope of provoking a vengeful Matt Murdock into killing her husband while he was imprisoned.

Following my revelation of the “Framegate” scandal that rocked the FBI, I found myself back in the gritty streets of Hell’s Kitchen. The rhythm of a familiar heartbeat echoed through the air, and lo and behold, it was none other than Foggy Nelson.
