Daredevil: Born Again Wasted 4 Major Marvel Characters

The first season of “Daredevil: Born Again” ended dramatically following nine gripping episodes that explored themes such as identity, power struggles, and morality. The story kicked off with a violent start when Matt Murdock’s lifelong friend and law partner, Foggy Nelson, was gunned down in Hell’s Kitchen by the villainous Bullseye. This unexpected killing was just one of four major deaths that occurred throughout the season, leaving viewers to wonder about the roles of the new characters, despite their deep connections to Daredevil. Although Foggy is not a new character, he played a crucial role in shaping Matt’s identity, and his death (or potential fake death) served as the push needed for Matt to step away from being Daredevil for the main storyline. However, the deaths of Hector Ayala, Muse, and Cole North, who are significant to Daredevil as a hero, seemed underutilized, especially given their importance in the Daredevil universe.

Let’s examine the significance and unfortunate demise of the four cherished characters from Daredevil, discussing why their passing seems regrettable.

Warning! This article contains spoilers for the season finale of Daredevil: Born Again.

Foggy Nelson

In the initial ten minutes of the premiere episode, Foggy Nelson’s demise was deeply affecting for both the characters within the series and viewers alike. If you’ve been following Daredevil since its Netflix debut, the joy of seeing Matt, Foggy, and Karen reunited after a decade filled with development challenges was evident. Foggy is the essence of this series, and witnessing the loss of a valued and adored character on the streets following ten years was emotionally exhausting. Although Foggy’s death serves a purpose in pushing Matt away from his vigilante life, it remains a regrettable loss of a well-loved character cherished by fans.

From the very first episode onwards, numerous theories suggesting Foggy’s death was a ruse and that he’s in a witness protection program have been circulating online. Even the official Daredevil social media channels hinted at this theory, fueling fans’ optimism that perhaps Foggy Nelson isn’t truly gone. It’s not unprecedented for Foggy to be thought dead in his comic book history, and it’s not even the first time Vanessa was the one pulling the trigger. Fans hold onto the belief that Foggy is still alive because he plays such a crucial role in Daredevil. Without Foggy by Matt and Karen’s side, things just don’t feel right.

White Tiger

Hector Ayala, also known as The White Tiger, was another unexpected demise, given the way the series had been hyped before its premiere. Based on the trailers, it seemed that the White Tiger, a frequent and loyal sidekick to Daredevil, was set to play a significant role throughout the entire series. After Matt Murdock managed to clear Hector of a murder charge, Hector returned home, ready to don his White Tiger suit once more. As Hector patrolled the streets in his full-fledged outfit, it appeared as though he had a bright future ahead, potentially filling Daredevil’s vacant position. However, this promising outlook was abruptly ended when Ayala was fatally shot by one of Fisk’s officers (later revealed to be Cole North), instantly collapsing to the ground and losing consciousness.

White Tiger stands out as a groundbreaking superhero, being the first from Latin America in any comic book series, and his abilities are truly extraordinary. Just moments before Ayala’s untimely demise, I wouldn’t have imagined such an ending because the audience hadn’t yet witnessed the White Tiger in action, and unfortunately, never did. It seemed like a missed opportunity for Marvel to introduce a character of such importance, only to have him demonstrate his powers sparingly, limit his narrative to a court case, and use it primarily to advance Matt Murdock’s storyline as he reclaimed the role of Daredevil.

Muse

I was thrilled when Marvel revealed that Muse would be the principal antagonist (alongside Kingpin) in Daredevil: Born Again. Regardless of how unsettling and brutal he is, his portrayal excites me due to his intriguing comic book history. Muse is a serial killer known for incorporating his victims’ blood and body parts into his artwork. He stands out among Daredevil’s adversaries as one of the most challenging to defeat.

In the Netflix series “Born Again”, Muse’s storyline, which had great potential for depth and a thrilling cat-and-mouse game with Daredevil, was unfortunately truncated to just a few episodes and concluded with Muse being killed off. While Muse served as a means to put Heather in danger and lure Daredevil out for Fisk’s propaganda, he deserved a full season’s worth of exploration to truly develop his complex character and add more layers to the already dark tone of the series.

Cole North

I must admit, there’s still a lingering doubt in my mind about North’s demise. Despite being found unconscious in Matt’s building before it was destroyed by an explosion, there’s no definitive proof that Cole North is dead. Granted, surviving an explosion under his current condition seems nearly impossible, but if Cole North has met his end, it would be a shame to lose such a complex and intriguing character.

Cole North, as portrayed in the comics, brings a ruthless and straightforward attitude towards law enforcement. This fits perfectly with the North that Fisk places on the anti-vigilante task force because, let’s face it, North isn’t exactly known for his strong moral compass or unblemished record. If Cole North is indeed gone, his absence would be a significant loss to the storyline.

In the comics, North’s encounters with Daredevil become quite frequent, leading him to perceive a different perspective on the turmoil in New York City. Rather than escalating the violence by obstructing vigilantes or adding to it, North eventually aligns with Daredevil and other allies, transforming into a more upright and admirable police officer. During the first season of Born Again, there was a sense that Cole North was undergoing self-examination – an evolution that promised to be rewarding in Season 2. However, should North have met his end in the explosion, it would be a regrettable squandering of a captivating and ethically complex character striving for self-improvement.

Filming for Season 2 of “Daredevil: Born Again” has already commenced. For now, fans can only speculate whether the depicted deaths will be final, with one exception being Hector, who seems to have met his end for good.
