[Caution: This review discusses significant plot points from Daredevil: Born Again episode 7 titled “Art for Art’s Sake.”] Marvel Television has been drawing inspiration from the storylines of Charles Soule and Chip Zdarsky’s Daredevil comic book series in their adaptation, notably the “Mayor Fisk” narrative. The latest episode saw Matt Murdock, better known as Daredevil (played by Charlie Cox), pursuing mural artist and covert serial killer Muse, a character also under scrutiny by Mayor Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) and his Anti-Vigilante Task Force.
Following Daredevil’s pursuit of Muse to his hidden lair within the subway to prevent Angela Del Toro (Camila Rodriguez) from becoming his next target, a fierce and brutal brawl took place instead, ultimately resulting in Muse fleeing the scene.
On Tuesday’s “Art for Art’s Sake” episode, we learned that Muse, portrayed by Hunter Doohan from “Wednesday”, is actually Bastion Cooper. This character is a troubled patient of therapist Dr. Heather Glenn (played by Margarita Levieva), who is currently dating Matt Murdock. With 60 lives already on his conscience, and possibly one more had it not been for Daredevil, he was revealed to be targeting Heather.
We discovered that Bastion was expelled from Phillips Exeter Academy and involuntarily committed at the ages of 15, 17, and 20. His parents forced him into Taekwondo competition, leading him to kill his coach. Deciding to follow his passions for art and murder, he used his creativity under Heather’s guidance, saying “This city is finally starting to see me for who I really am.”
Unveiling himself as the masked madman Muse, Bastion attempted to drain Heather of her blood in order to create his next artistic masterpiece.
In a daring move, Daredevil intervened violently against Muse, who later met a tragic end when Heather fatally shot him. On arrival at the scene, Sergeant Cole North of the A.V.T.F., played by Jeremy Earl, found Muse deceased. However, Fisk manipulated his Task Force to wrongly claim responsibility for capturing a dangerous serial killer. In a televised address to the citizens, Mayor Fisk declared, “The masked vigilantes can no longer hold our city in their grip.” I pledged to ensure your safety, and I have fulfilled that promise.
Episode 7 is similar to issues #598 to #600 of Daredevil, written by Soule and illustrated by Ron Garney in 2018. This segment marks the conclusion of a six-part storyline known as “Mayor Fisk,” where the villainous Inhuman Muse broke free from his prison in New Attilan, the capital city of the powerful Inhumans, and resumed his murder spree. The challenge for Daredevil lies in tracking down the Inhuman serial killer since the Muse’s abilities enable him to draw sensory data into himself like a whirlwind, making it difficult for Daredevil to rely on his heightened senses to locate the culprit.
In issue #600 of ‘Daredevil’, the Man Without Fear gathered a team of street-level heroes – Spider-Man, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Misty Knight, Iron Fist, Echo, and Moon Knight – to combat Fisk and reclaim New York City. Simultaneously, Daredevil’s associate, Blindspot, was influenced by the demonic Beast of the Hand and attempted to kill Muse. With a defeated Muse uttering “I had so much beauty left” as he self-immolated, it became clear that he was a tormented artist until his final breath.
