Caution: Contains plot revelations! The climax of the first season of Daredevil: Born Again left viewers on edge due to several unresolved mysteries. However, it’s the uncertainty surrounding Foggy Nelson that has sparked the most debate among fans. Marvel has confirmed Elden Henson’s return for Season 2, leading many to speculate that the Season 1 finale would reveal Foggy’s survival. Now that the season has ended without any indication of Foggy’s status, some viewers feel misled and frustrated as they had expected Foggy to reappear in Season 2. To them, this cliffhanger appears unnecessary because they are confident that Foggy will return in future episodes.
Confirmation was given by Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Studios’ streaming chief, that both Foggy and Karen Page (played by Deborah Ann Woll) will reappear in the second season of Daredevil: Born Again. It is possible that Foggy may show up in flashbacks, dream sequences, or even an alternate reality, given the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s expected immersion into its Multiverse Saga. However, fans have observed numerous hints pointing towards a storyline where Foggy faked his death, a plot twist reminiscent of a significant comic book arc.
In total, there was a great buildup leading to an anticipated surprise in the final episode of the season, but what fans hoped for was not delivered. Unsurprisingly, those who felt let down weren’t hesitant to express their disappointment on social media platforms.
One fan account expressed their frustration by saying, ‘They were incredibly harsh with all the subtle hints. I can’t help but wonder,’ followed by another response, ‘If he doesn’t return for Season 2, they clearly don’t care about us… They made it seem as though it wasn’t a big deal, so instead we’re just left feeling somewhat detached and empty.’
On the contrary, those fans who hold the belief that Foggy is permanently gone seem to be just as unhappy. Regardless of whether they never accepted the survival theories in the first place or have since lost faith now that the season has concluded, it’s evidently a contentious issue for numerous commentators.
I’m really struggling to accept that the authors killed off Foggy. They could have come up with another way to put Matt in a difficult situation while keeping Foggy alive. I’ve got mixed feelings about this season – excited to see Daredevil again, but without Foggy, it just won’t feel as magical.
Is Foggy Alive?
The argument for Foggy’s continued existence presents a robust case, despite some online discussions that may give the impression of it being weaker than it actually is. This notion originates from a 2006 comic book storyline where Matt (character) is incarcerated, and during one of his visits, Foggy gets stabbed apparently at random by another inmate. Matt suspects he hears Foggy’s heart stop as they rush him away, leading both Matt and the reader to believe that Foggy has perished.
A subsequent installment titled “The Hidden Life of Foggy Nelson” discloses that Foggy managed to survive the stabbing due to quick medical intervention from paramedics and doctors. Following this, he was contacted by the FBI who enrolled him into the witness protection program, causing him to live in secrecy thereafter. Despite his attempts to reclaim his former identity and reunite with Matt, Foggy is prevented by Elektra and agents of the Hand, who make it clear that they are monitoring him and wish for him to remain hidden.
As a devoted movie enthusiast, what truly hooked me in “Born Again” was the shocking revelation that Vanessa Fisk had ordered Foggy’s assassination. In this comic saga, she secretly orchestrated Foggy’s stabbing while he was imprisoned. Though the show doesn’t seem to be following this specific plotline, the intricate web of connections has certainly sparked excitement among fans, fueling hopes that Foggy might make a comeback on the small screen—especially considering Henson’s addition to the Season 2 cast.
Some people find that the end of the season doesn’t contradict this theory in the least. It remains plausible that Foggy’s survival will be unveiled in Season 2, and it might even be a clever cliffhanger to entice viewers to return for another round. Filming for Season 2 commenced in February and will carry on until July. Its release is expected during the first half of 2026 as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase Six. For now, all four seasons of Daredevil can be streamed on Disney+.
