Daredevil’s Comeback: Everything You Need to Know Before Born Again

Hell’s Kitchen calls and the Devil waits for no one – it’s almost time for Daredevil: Born Again!

In simple terms, Charlie Cox is coming back as Matt Murdock (also known as Daredevil) in the upcoming Disney Plus series, which picks up from where the Netflix show left off when it was terminated in 2018.

I’m thrilled to find myself surrounded by a cast of beloved characters in this production. Elden Henson dons the role of Foggy, Deborah Ann Woll brings Karen to life, Vincent D’Onofrio embodies Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, Jon Bernthal takes on Frank Castle/The Punisher, and Wilson Bethel steps into the shoes of Bullseye.

It’s been quite some time since Daredevil last appeared on our screens, and during this hiatus, Matt Murdock (Daredevil) has been keeping busy with appearances in The Defenders, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and She-Hulk. Meanwhile, Wilson Fisk (Kingpin) has also been active, holding a significant role in Echo.

Before diving back into the action of Hell’s Kitchen, let me provide a comprehensive summary and key points to catch up before watching Daredevil: Born Again.

What happened in Daredevil? Full recap

Daredevil season 1 (2015)

Indeed, I first crossed paths with Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock in the gripping Netflix series, Daredevil. It was a heart-wrenching moment for us devoted viewers when this captivating tale was abruptly brought to an end following its third season.

In the first season, we met compassionate attorneys Murdock and Nelson, who protected an innocent woman named Karen Page from being falsely accused and subsequently endangered by murder. With no other options, Karen joined the law firm of Murdock & Nelson and developed a strong relationship with both lawyers.

As a youngster, an unfortunate accident robbed me of my sight, yet granted me extraordinary senses that transformed me into the masked crusader known as Daredevil. Growing increasingly disenchanted with the law’s limited capabilities to combat the escalating crime waves in Hell’s Kitchen, I found myself taking matters into my own hands – not without encountering a fair share of challenges along the way.

In the first season, the main antagonist was Wilson Fisk, also known as Kingpin, a ruthless mob boss who cold-bloodedly murdered numerous individuals and manipulated events to cause their deaths. He held significant influence over figures in law enforcement, media, and government. However, by the end of the season, Fisk and his associates were eventually apprehended by authorities.

However, Fisk seems to have a destructive path behind him, with casualties such as Elena Cardenas, a client of Nelson & Murdock, and journalist Ben Urich. Yet, it appears his actions are far from over.

Daredevil season 2 (2016)

During season 2, while Fisk is imprisoned, several gangs aim to dominate Hell’s Kitchen; however, anarchy breaks out when a masked avenger, later recognized as The Punisher, systematically eliminates criminal elements.

It’s revealed that he goes by the name Frank Castle, a retired Marine whose family tragically fell victim to a gunfight between rival gangs, the Irish and the Dogs of Hell. Following his capture by Daredevil, Castle is swiftly taken into custody (with Daredevil giving Sergeant Mahoney the credit for the arrest in an effort to rebuild public trust in law enforcement).

As Karen and Matt develop a (temporary) relationship, Matt receives a visit from his former partner Elektra. She seeks assistance in handling issues with Roxxon Corporation’s Japanese branch, a company her father had business connections with. Matt consents to aid Elektra in an investigation concerning the Yakuza. During their probe, they uncover that both entities serve as facades for the antiquated organization known as The Hand.

In the meantime, Nelson & Murdock decide to support Castle in uncovering the truth about his family’s fate – however, he rejects a plea bargain, maintaining innocence, which leads to a public trial. Matt arrives late for the trial because of his duties as Daredevil and his bond with Foggy weakens. On the witness stand, Castle unintentionally undermines his own defense and is incarcerated, where he crosses paths with Fisk.

As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but notice how Fisk manipulates Castle, goading him into taking the life of another inmate under the guise of false assurances regarding information about his family. However, it’s worth mentioning that he does manage to orchestrate his release from prison.

In the last installment, The Hand captures individuals whom Murdock aided, including Karen, as their prisoners. In this climactic battle, Matt and Elektra confront The Hand to free the hostages. Eventually, they succeed in doing so, with Castle stepping forward to lend assistance later on. Tragically, Elektra gives up her life as a sacrifice.

Intriguingly, the closing acts of this season depict Elektra being enclosed within an old artifact, suggesting a tantalizing possibility: her potential return from the dead. As a devoted moviegoer, I can’t help but feel a spark of anticipation at the prospect!

Daredevil season 3 (2018)

Season 3 sees an escalating battle between Matt and and Fisk.

As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but reflect on the gripping season where Kingpin masterfully orchestrated FBI Special Agent Benjamin “Dex” Poindexter into emulating Daredevil – yet it’s the chilling revelation that Kingpin cold-bloodedly took the life of a woman cherished by Poindexter, which ultimately sets in motion a climactic confrontation.

Following an intense brawl among the trio, Daredevil manages to coerce Kingpin into returning to prison (in order to keep Vanessa, portrayed by Ayelet Zurer, out of jail). Simultaneously, Poindexter sustains a fractured spine and the closing sequence depicts him undergoing surgery, transforming into the infamous comic book antagonist Bullseye – a character set to reappear in Born Again.

Beyond the suspenseful climax, Daredevil’s third season concludes in an unanticipated joyful manner as Matt Murdock, Foggy Nelson (portrayed by Elden Henson), and Karen Page (played by Deborah Ann Woll) decide to join forces and start their own law firm.

What happened to Daredevil in The Defenders? (2017)

Our next encounter with Matt will be in the 2017 series “The Defenders.” In this show, he is portrayed as a lawyer working pro bono. The narrative unfolds with Matt, along with Jessica Jones played by Krysten Ritter, Danny Rand (Finn Jones), and Luke Cage (Mike Colter), fighting against The Hand in a dramatic battle.

Following the decisive fight, there are assumptions that Matt perished, leaving Foggy and Karen distraught – until a closing scene suggests otherwise, revealing he’s still among the living. Unlike Daredevil, The Defenders concluded after just one season, with a gap of four years before his return to our TV screens.

What happened to Daredevil in Spider-Man: No Way Home? (2021)

Worldwide movie theaters echoed with gasps when Matt Murdock unexpectedly emerged on the big screen, making his presence felt in one of the most eagerly awaited Marvel Cinematic Universe films ever produced.

In the role of Peter Parker’s (Tom Holland) attorney, Matt nonchalantly shields Peter from a brick shattering through the window – without disclosing his secrets, he instead modestly comments: “I’m quite an exceptional lawyer.

The short appearance effectively serves to reintegrate Matt into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

What happened to Daredevil in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law? (2022)

As I eagerly watched the concluding chapters of She-Hulk, I couldn’t help but feel my heart skip a beat when Daredevil appeared on screen in his fresh new attire. It seemed like the creators were subtly hinting at a romantic connection between him and Tatiana Maslany’s character, Jennifer Walters, leaving me intrigued about what was to come.

Following an exceptionally self-referential season finale, the story draws to a close as Matt finds himself enjoying a peaceful family barbecue. A blissful future, you might think? But wait for it, because Maya Lopez makes her entrance into the scene just when things start getting predictable…

What happened to Daredevil and Kingpin in Echo? (2024)

In the movie “Echo,” Matt makes a short, fleeting appearance. The story begins with him engaging in combat with Maya Lopez (played by Alaqua Cox).

However, Fisk plays a significant part since he is Maya’s foster uncle. When Maya uncovers that he was the one behind her father’s demise, she takes aim and shoots him squarely in the eye; yet, predictably, he survives this ordeal.

Following his recovery from his wounds, Fisk proposes to her that he’ll hand over his criminal domain in exchange for her returning with him to New York, should she agree. Yet, she departs without him.

In retaliation, Fisk abducts Maya’s grandmother Chula and cousin Bonnie, warning that he will harm their family if they continue to deceive him. Using her abilities, Maya transports Fisk back to a past memory where his father is seen physically abusing his mother, hoping this reminder will help him release his anger.

A mid-credits scene shows Fisk deciding to run for Mayor of New York City.
