Dark Horse is Reprinting a Cult Favorite Manga Classic

It’s exciting news that Dark Horse Comics is planning to reprint the sequel to the popular manga, “Gunsmith Cats,” which was once a cult classic. According to Anime News Network, this announcement comes directly from Dark Horse’s official press release. The new edition will be a two-volume omnibus of “Gunsmith Cats Burst,” a direct continuation of the original “Gunsmith Cats” series. Originally, the manga was serialized monthly in Kodansha’s “Monthly Afternoon” magazine from 1991 to 1997, and “Burst” was published in the same magazine from 2004 to 2008. Dark Horse previously released the first five volumes of “Gunsmith Cats Burst” between 2007 and 2010, but these copies have been out of print for quite some time.

Dark Horse is bringing back the classic Gunsmith Cats manga in three large-format editions. The initial installment of the Gunsmith Cats omnibus hit shelves on March 4th, 2025, with the remaining volumes planned for release later in the same year. Following closely, the first volume of the Gunsmith Cats Burst omnibus is set to drop on December 16th, 2025, while the second installment of this collection is slated for March 17th, 2026. Each Gunsmith Cats Burst omnibus will contain approximately 476 and 496 pages respectively, and Studio Cutie – a specialist in lettering – has worked on new translations, lettering, and touch-ups for these editions.

What Makes Gunsmith Cats a Classic?

The manga duo, Gunsmith Cats and Gunsmith Cats Burst, were both created by animator Kenichi Sonoda, showcasing a distinctive Western flair. This series introduces Rally Vincent, a young woman who runs the Gunsmith Cat gun shop in Chicago. In her spare time, Rally doubles as a bounty hunter, frequently collaborating with her partner, Minnie May. A vibrant cast of characters accompanies them on their adventures through the darker side of Chicago. The series garnered praise for its captivating artwork, endearing protagonists, and lighthearted atmosphere.

Initially, the manga titled “Gunsmith Cats” was transformed into a three-episode Original Video Animation (OVA) by OLM. This anime quickly gained popularity and became well-known for its dynamic action sequences and striking character designs. Later on, AnimEigo, a U.S.-based licensing company, launched a Kickstarter campaign to produce a new Blu-ray version of the anime for distribution in North America. The “Gunsmith Cats” Kickstarter was successful, leading to the official release of the Blu-ray in 2019. Interestingly, AnimEigo had previously organized a Kickstarter campaign for the animated adaptation of Sonoda’s “Riding Bean”, another cult classic with a distinctive Western style, back in 2016. The “Riding Bean” Kickstarter also proved to be successful, with the Blu-Ray becoming available for purchase in 2017.
