As a seasoned comic book critic who has traversed the labyrinth of superhero sagas and delved into the mystical realms of magic, I must say that Mark Millar’s latest offering, Vatican City, piques my interest like a freshly staked vampire. The concept of survival horror and vampires in the hallowed grounds of Vatican City is an intriguing twist on the genre, and one that I’ve not encountered before.
Veteran comic book author Mark Millar (known for Kick-Ass and The Magic Order) is venturing into survival horror and vampire genres with his latest series, titled Vatican City, published by Dark Horse Comics. In this new collaboration with artist Per Berg (Machete Squad), the story unfolds in a world grappling with a vampire apocalypse. Here’s your exclusive sneak peek at the upcoming thriller, available in the gallery below.
In the gallery provided, the initial issue will debut with a unique black-and-white cover by Berg, along with a variant cover by John McCrea (known for Dead Eyes and Blue Book) and colorist John Kalisz (Garbage Man). You’ll have the opportunity to collect all these covers when the series officially begins in April 2025. The official description for Vatican City can be found below.
A global vampire uprising has claimed nearly every life on Earth. Remarkably, only about two thousand tourists are secure within the fortified walls and sacred artifacts of Vatican City. However, as countless vampires mass outside, the question remains: for how long can these survivors endure? For these monsters have an uncanny ability to wait indefinitely.
millar’s concept, which he’s been nurturing for quite a while now, has some aspects found in his The Magic Order series. The opportunity to fully explore these elements and provide the narrative with the grandeur it required was Vatican City, and Berg is an ideal candidate to realize this vision.
For years, I’ve been nurturing an intriguing concept: a spin-off of ‘Assault on Precinct 13,’ set in the Vatican, with vampires, tourists, and staff protected by holy relics as darkness overtakes the rest of the world. I initially incorporated this idea into The Magic Order as a minor plotline in volume 3, but I’ve always wanted to expand upon it and tell the full story. The opportunity to bring this tale to life is what excites me most about Vatican City,” says writer Mark Millar.
What particularly thrills me is collaborating with Per Berg, whose work I’ve admired for a couple of years now. I’ve been eager to team up with him on a project, and this collaboration has exceeded all my anticipations. It’s the craziest thing I’ve ever created – you’re going to be captivated by it.” – Millar expressed.
Beginning on April 9th, 2025, the first installment of a three-part series titled “Vatican City” will be available at comic book stores nationwide. If you’re eager to secure a copy, don’t forget to pre-order it at your local comic store for just $5.99!
