As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for comic books and a soft spot for unexplained phenomena, I can’t help but feel exhilarated at the prospect of diving into the Blue Book: Library Edition. Having spent countless hours immersed in games like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Mass Effect, where alien encounters are par for the course, it’s intriguing to delve into a narrative that is not only based on real-life events but also offers an analytical perspective.

The powerhouse trio behind “Something is Killing the Children,” “The Nice House on the Lake,” and other notable works like “Powers” and “William of Newbury,” consisting of James Tynion IV, Michael Avon Oeming, and Aditya Bidikar, have delved into the realm of extraterrestrial experiences with their successful non-fiction series, Blue Book. Dark Horse has recently unveiled a first glimpse at the upcoming Blue Book: Library Edition. This new edition will compile volumes 1 and 2 of this real-life story series, along with a cover gallery and sketchbook gallery. You can even get a sneak peek at the sketchbook in the gallery below!

For centuries, tales of the mysterious have held our fascination, and Blue Book offers a unique perspective on these real-life enigmas. Now, fans can enjoy both volumes in one easy-to-access package with the Blue Book Library Edition. This collection includes Blue Book: 1961 and Blue Book: 1947, as well as all cover artwork and behind-the-scenes sketches from Oeming. Check out the stylish new cover below!

In “Blue Book” published in 1961, Tynion and Oeming recount the tale of Betty and Barney Hill, a well-known abduction incident that has significantly impacted and molded subsequent encounter stories. Similarly, in “Blue Book” from 1947, the narrative focuses on pilot Kenneth Arnold, who experienced an extraordinary event while flying his Call-Air A-2 over the skies of the Pacific Northwest. This encounter with mysterious silver lights would transform the trajectory of Arnold’s life forever.

In the initial unveiling, Tynion shared that his inspiration for Blue Book came while working on The Department of Truth. He delved into a style he affectionately terms “True Weird,” which is a genre he’s particularly fond of.

Exploring The Department of Truth’s background, Tynion found himself delving deeper into the mysterious histories of the world,” he stated. “Tales of individuals who have come across unexplainable events and must deal with their doubtful yet unforgettable encounters. As I immersed myself in these stories, a recurring thought emerged – This material seems ripe for a captivating comic book adaptation.

In the Blue Book, I’m eager to delve further into a peculiar relative of True Crime genres – an area I refer to as True Weird. I’m intrigued by how individuals narrate experiences that challenge our understanding of logic and reality. What insights do these stories provide about humanity? I can hardly contain my enthusiasm about unraveling this mystery alongside Michael.” (Tynion)

The “Blue Book: Library Edition Volume 1” will be released in bookstores on July 8th, 2025, followed by its arrival in comic shops on July 9th, 2025. Preorders are currently available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, TFAW, and your local comic shop or bookstore.
