As a long-time gamer and comic book enthusiast, I have seen my fair share of dark and gritty stories set in the superhero universe. However, the new “Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter” miniseries by DC Comics stands out with its unique take on classic characters and immersive world-building.
In the realm of “Dark Knights of Steel,” two fresh narratives expand this universe: one delving into the past and the other unfolding in far-off waters. The new “Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter” comic series comprises an innovative prestige story penned by Australian fantasy author Jay Kristoff and French artist Tirso, as well as a prequel written by Tom Taylor with illustrations by Riccardo Federici. While these stories may not offer the shocking twists found in the initial miniseries akin to “Game of Thrones,” they both bring intriguing perspectives on DC’s classic characters. Kristoff and Tirso’s take on Deathstroke, in particular, captivates with its unique reimagining.
As a devoted fan, I’d describe the original “Dark Knights of Steel” as masterfully blending the edge-of-your-seat suspense of “Game of Thrones” with the comforting yet enigmatic feel of DC Comics’ rich universe. Instead of following that exact formula, Kristoff and Tirso opt for a darker and more sorrowful tone, painting a bleak landscape with shades of black and white to represent Vandal Savage’s icy domain. In this chilling North, where Savage has established his empire, Slade plays a significant role in maintaining his power.
I found the distinctive elements of “Allwinter” particularly appealing. Unlike the initial “Dark Knights of Steel” series, Kristoff and Tirso chose a unique approach with a “low” fantasy style influenced by Norse mythology instead of Central European knights. Moreover, they employed an exclusively grey color palette for this comic, which symbolizes both Savage’s bleak reign and Slade’s pessimistic perspective on life. This monochromatic scheme also sets the stage for the shocking full-color reveal on the final page, highlighting the significance of Slade as both a target and an extreme shift in Slade’s previously gloomy outlook. Despite the differences from the original “Dark Knights of Steel” series, “Allwinter” doesn’t veer so far off course that it feels disconnected.
In the meantime, Taylor goes back to his previously crafted universe in “Heir to the Sea” with a fresh prequel tale focusing on Jonathan and Martha Kent. These characters were absent in “Dark Knights of Steel.” Here, they are depicted as esteemed warriors employed by the Waynes. Their paths cross with an underwater despot and what appears to be an emerging Aquaman. The concept of the warrior Kents raising Aquaman is intriguing, given that none of these characters appear in “Dark Knights of Steel,” which takes place after “Heir to the Sea.” This story, currently, mainly sets up the scene. I’m eagerly anticipating Taylor and Federici’s creation based on this setup alone.
In simple terms, Allwinter is an exciting addition to the initial Dark Knights of Steel storyline by DC Comics. I’m thrilled that they recognize the potential in this fantasy-infused interpretation of their superhero realm. Just like Taylor initiated a daring and perilous atmosphere with the original miniseries, Allwinter seems poised to carry on this theme at the beginning.
