11 bit studios, the Polish developer and publisher, carries on its trend of intriguing game announcements with the upcoming title ‘Death Howl.’ This announcement follows closely behind the unveiling of Moonlighter’s sequel. The development of Death Howl is being handled by The Outer Zone, and it’s set to be released in the year 2025 on PC platforms. A playable demo for Death Howl will become available on Steam starting Monday, January 20, at 10 AM PT/1 PM ET.
What is Death Howl?
Death Howl
In this atmospheric soulslike game, you’ll assume the role of Ro, a heartbroken mother on a harrowing quest to find her lost son. The journey is fraught with peril as she navigates an otherworldly landscape steeped in ancient Nordic folklore.
As Ro, you’ll delve into a grid-based, turn-driven combat system where you’ll face off against malevolent and tenacious spirits. To succeed, you’ll need to strategize and meticulously craft your deck by creating totems and unlocking distinct deck types. The ultimate goal is reunification, but the path is filled with challenges that will test your skills and resolve.
In pursuit of reconnecting with her son, Ro journeys across Death Howl’s diverse landscapes, which encompass chilling areas such as the Forest of Echoing Shadows and the Fields of Falsehood—depicted in a distinctive retro and eerie pixel art form, with colors that seem strikingly outdated, enhancing the unsettling atmosphere of the bizarre creatures Ro encounters.
Delving into different biomes serves multiple purposes beyond acquiring new card decks. It also sheds light on Ro’s story, unfolding a deeply human narrative that revolves around love and grief. Malte Burup, the creator behind Death Howl at The Outer Zone, shared, “The pain of losing someone is something everyone experiences—an inherent aspect of being human. We aim to strike a chord with players from all walks of life by weaving our story around compelling lore and blending it seamlessly with deck-building mechanics inspired by the soulslike exploration genre.
At The Outer Zone, Burup is accompanied by Rasmus Nilsson and Lasse Sommer. Rasmus functions as both a programmer and designer within the team, while Lasse brings his skills as an animator, artist, and designer to the table. This compact studio, nestled in Copenhagen, has previously launched three other games into the market. Among these titles are ‘Mind Scanners’, which first appeared in 2021 and initially debuted on Xbox Game Pass before leaving the platform. The publication of Mind Scanners was handled by Brave at Night.
In contrast to their initial creation, Sofus and the Moonmachine, Death Howl appears to represent a significant evolution in both gameplay and narrative style from the developers. The former, being an interactive storybook game for young kids, was exclusive to iOS platforms.
11 Bit Studios, the Polish game publisher behind ‘Death Howl’, specializes in creating and distributing independent games such as Frostpunk, Moonlighter, and This War of Mine. Previously, they’ve partnered with Microsoft to make more of their games available on Xbox Game Pass, but it’s unclear if Death Howl will be part of that deal. As of now, Death Howl is scheduled for a PC release on Steam and GOG in 2025. A playable demo for Death Howl will be released on Steam starting January 20.
