Despite not being widely popular, The New Gods remain a crucial franchise in DC Comics, as they were brought to life by Jack Kirby, who introduced a contemporary mythology. While many are familiar with at least one New God, such as Darkseid, the others like Mister Miracle, Big Barda, and Orion are less known. As for the remaining New Gods, they remain relatively unknown. The New Gods are poised to make a significant impact in the DC Multiverse in the future, with Ram V and Evan Cagle taking on the latest volume of New Gods. In issue #1 of New Gods, the new status quo is established, introducing a new group called the Nyctari, beings who appear to bestow oblivion upon the world. They target both New Genesis and Apokolips in this series. In issue #5, the Nyctari launch an attack on New Genesis, with Highfather, the ruler of the planet, being captured by an unexpected Nyctari – Grayven, Darkseid’s son. However, Highfather is not alone, as Lightray attempts to save him, albeit unsuccessfully.
In a brief yet intense confrontation, Grayven and Lightray clash violently, with their encounter appearing to result in Lightray’s demise. Although they may not be as well-known among the New Gods, both Grayven and Lightray have made significant contributions to the New Gods’ lore. The resurrection of Grayven and the passing of Lightray are significant events; however, many fans might not fully grasp their importance unless they delve into the characters’ backstories.
Grayven and Lightray Are Esoteric but Important
As a devoted cinephile, I’d rephrase it like this: In the epic DC tale “Kingdom Come”, Superman confides in Orion that he perceived the saga of the New Gods as one of fathers and sons, where the old eventually make way for the new. This description encapsulates the essence of the New Gods’ narrative, although not every son ascends to the level of his father. Grayven, Darkseid’s youngest son, is a prime example of this pattern, being one of the least significant offspring of the God of Evil.
Darkseid, known for his disdain towards Kalibak and fear of Orion, holds Grayven in negligible regard. Yet, as the son of Darkseid, Grayven possesses immense power among the New Gods, boasting unmeasurable strength and access to the Omega Effect. Regrettably, Grayven has barely made an impact in Darkseid’s life, and his mother hails from one of the worlds that Darkseid conquered. Since then, he’s been scarcely seen since the 2007 book “Death of the New Gods”, a prelude to the monumental event “Final Crisis”.
As a devoted admirer of the cosmic sagas unfolding within the DC Universe, I’d be delighted to share my thoughts on Lightray, one of the valiant warriors hailing from New Genesis. This hero, with his unwavering loyalty and prodigious strength, served as a beacon of hope in the otherwise gloomy realm of Orion.
Through their shared experiences under the peace treaty between Highfather and Darkseid, Lightray and Orion forged an enduring bond. In the dark corners of New Genesis, Lightray illuminated the path for his friend, offering solace amidst the turmoil. His extraordinary abilities, such as flight, super strength, invulnerability, and the power to manipulate light and its energies, were all part and parcel of being a New God.
Lightray, however, was more than just another member of this celestial pantheon; he stood by Orion’s side, assisting his friend in navigating the intricacies of New Genesis and finding balance amidst his raging emotions. Alas, Lightray may not hold the same clout as some of his peers, but he certainly left an indelible mark on the DC Multiverse.
In Tom King and Mitch Gerads’ captivating series, Mister Miracle, Lightray served as Orion’s trusted lieutenant, demonstrating unwavering dedication to his comradeship. A character with humble beginnings but immense potential, Lightray continues to captivate and inspire those who dare to venture into the vast expanse of the DC Universe.
The Loss of Lightray and the Return of Grayven Could Doom the New Gods
Since issue #1 of DC All-In, Darkseid has been absent from the scene, leading both the citizens of New Genesis and Apokolips to believe he’s deceased, creating a massive power void in the universe. In his stead, the Nyctari have taken charge, engaging in conflicts that would mirror Darkseid’s actions if he were still present. Grayven aligning with the Nyctari is significant; while we don’t fully comprehend their might, we do recognize that Grayven possesses immense power even when he doesn’t utilize it fully. This alliance provides them an edge they wouldn’t otherwise have.
In the storyline of “New Gods,” Lightray’s demise will undoubtedly bring about significant repercussions. Although not the most powerful among the New Gods, Lightray is known for his unwavering loyalty and readiness for battle. His heroic act of intervening to save Highfather is true to character. Losing such a dedicated soldier will have serious implications, particularly given that Mister Miracle, Big Barda, and Orion are preoccupied with a dire prophecy that sets Miracle and Barda against Orion. With Highfather lacking his key soldiers and the Nyctari on New Genesis, expect things to get grim and bloody in “New Gods.
