- DarkSky is a new third-party app for Bluesky.
- The app is available on Windows 11 through the Microsoft Store.
- DarkSky is in preview but will gain exclusive features in the future.
As a seasoned tech enthusiast who has witnessed the rise and fall of numerous social media platforms, I must admit that the emergence of Bluesky and its third-party apps like DarkSky is quite intriguing. While it’s reminiscent of Twitter’s early days, Bluesky seems to be learning from the mistakes of the past and striving for a more user-friendly experience.
BlueSky recently introduced a novel app specifically designed for Windows 11, which boasts unique new attributes and an aesthetically pleasing layout. This innovative app, known as DarkSky for BlueSky, sports a contemporary design that seamlessly integrates with the Windows 11 interface. Although Bluesky functions smoothly on Windows 11 via a web browser, DarkSky offers a more native-like experience tailored to PCs. Still in its initial stages, the primary goal is to match the functionality of the web version of Bluesky; however, future updates will bring exclusive features to this app.
Due to its recent launch, DarkSky undergoes frequent updates. The latest one bumped its version up to 0.3.7, indicating its novelty.
The primary goal when developing DarkSky for BlueSky is to match the features found on the web version. Here’s a list of what was included in DarkSky version 0.3.7.
- Notifications
- Mentions, links, hashtags
- View other profiles
- Open quote posts, links
- Create text posts
- Bug fixes, error handling
Currently, I wouldn’t advise using DarkSky as your primary Bluesky client. Although it functions, it’s still quite new and rapidly evolving. In just the past five days, it has added the ability to open profiles, support for embeds in posts that have been opened, an image viewer, and the display of alt text.
The best Bluesky experience on Windows right now will come from installing Bluesky as a progressive web app (PWA) or using deck.blue, which is similar to TweetDeck.
Although DarkSky isn’t a complete Bluesky client at the moment, it serves as an incubator for app development. It’s quite intriguing to observe the sequence of features being incorporated, identify the glitches that surface, and witness how developers can differentiate their third-party client from the original apps and online experiences provided by Bluesky.
I had a conversation with the developers at FireCubeStudios, who are behind the creation of DarkSky. They shared some exciting updates that are coming to the app in the future. Some of the new capabilities will include bookmarking, downloading videos, creating drafts for posts, scheduling content, and additional unique features.
What is Bluesky?
Bluesky serves as a vibrant hub for trendsetting individuals. Have you not heard? It resembles X (previously Twitter), but without the chaos. Interestingly, Microsoft has also joined Bluesky, though I suspect they may have borrowed our ideas since we were there first, as evidenced by our Starter Pack. Currently, Bluesky functions smoothly on Windows 11 via a web browser, yet DarkSky offers a more tailored experience for PCs. In its infancy, the main goal is to match the functionality of the web version of Bluesky, but in time, the app will boast unique features.
For some time now, Bluesky has been present, but it’s recently seen an enormous surge of users and influencers joining its ranks. This shift from X and the influx of newcomers has sparked a need for Bluesky applications. Just last month, we discussed Beeskie, another Bluesky client, which is currently in beta stage and quite simple at the moment. However, it’s important to note that Beeskie was developed by a Microsoft software engineer, indicating potential future advancements within the app.
To give you an idea of how rapidly Bluesky is expanding, when we last wrote about Beeskie on November 18th, Bluesky had 19 million users. Today, Bluesky boasts roughly 25 million users. Just three months ago, the platform had only 7 million users. With tech giants like Microsoft investing in Bluesky and influential figures joining its ranks, it seems that the momentum behind Bluesky is set to escalate. As this growth continues, third-party applications are expected to develop and cater to various niches within the Bluesky community.
