At Star Wars Celebration 2025 in Japan, there are plenty of thrilling updates being shared. Notable attendees include Hayden Christensen and Dave Filoni, but let’s not forget about Sam Witwer – the talented voice actor behind Darth Maul in the Star Wars animated series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels, and Solo: A Star Wars Story. Witwer’s portrayal of Maul became iconic following his return from death after Star Wars: The Phantom Menace in a four-episode arc during the Season 4 finale of The Clone Wars. During the Lucasfilm Animation’s 20th anniversary panel, Witwer announced that he will reprise his role as Maul in the upcoming animated series, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord. This announcement has sparked immense excitement across the Star Wars community, further solidifying Maul’s position as a prominent Sith Lord.
More recently, Witwer resumed his role as Maul to narrate a fresh audiobook version of the Star Wars Legends Essentials tale: “Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter“. Given the new animated series, it’s a must-listen for fans captivated by Maul and the enigmatic Dark Side of the Star Wars lore.
Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter Shines a Light on Maul’s Early Actions
The 2001 novel titled “Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter,” authored by Michael Reeves, was initially published. This book is set before the occurrences in “The Phantom Menace,” as Maul’s character was absent from the Star Wars narrative until 2012 in “The Clone Wars.” The novel was reissued that year to align with the animated series and once more in 2022 for “The Essential Legends Collection.” Works labeled as “Legends” encompass all Star Wars media produced prior to Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2014, excluding the Original and Prequel Trilogy films and “The Clone Wars” animated series. This classification aims to create a unified storyline with no conflicts in continuity. Given that “The Clone Wars” reintroduced Maul into the Star Wars lore, it’s logical that Lucasfilm and Disney would adapt “Shadow Hunter” for the forthcoming “Maul – Shadow Lord” animated series.
As a devoted cinephile, I’m excitedly recounting my anticipation for the upcoming film, “Shadow Hunter,” which takes place prior to Episode I. This gripping tale follows Darth Maul on a mission assigned by his master, the enigmatic Darth Sidious, also known as Emperor Palpatine. In the shadows, Sidious has discovered that a vital piece of information about his strategies for the Trade Federation’s blockade of Naboo has been leaked.
The culprit is none other than Hath Monchar, a Neimoidian within Viceroy Nute Gunray’s inner circle. This cunning individual has managed to acquire and flee with this critical data, intending to cash in on the black market of Coruscant. This leak poses a significant threat to Sidious’ intricate political machinations by potentially revealing his long-held Sith plans to both the Jedi Order and the Republic Senate.
Infuriated by this potential unraveling of his delicate political maneuvers, Sidious sends Maul to Coruscant on a deadly mission: to track down Monchar and eliminate him permanently, thereby ensuring the secrecy of the Sith’s plans remains intact.
Without Sidious and Maul knowing it, the stolen information had been secretly obtained by Lorn Pavan, a shrewd but weary information dealer who moves in the murky depths of Coruscant. Lorn swiftly realized the worth of this data – a Sith holocron that not only exposed an upcoming blockade but also incriminated Sidious. This revelation immediately marked Lorn as a prime enemy to Maul’s anger.
Amidst the chaos of data breaches and covert kill orders, I find myself accompanying Jedi Padawan Darsha Assant as she bravely embarks on her pivotal journey towards becoming a Jedi Knight. Her final challenge leads us to the perilous depths of Coruscant, where we follow a trail connected to the ruthless Black Sun crime syndicate. It is here that my path crosses with Lorn Pavan. At first, Lorn harbored mistrust for the Jedi due to past grudges; however, when the relentless pursuit of Maul begins to intensify, he finds himself unwillingly partnered with the dedicated but green Padawan Darsha Assant. When our names are marked by Maul, we find ourselves fleeing for our lives and navigating the treacherous underworld, evading not only Maul but also bounty hunters hot on the trail of a precious holocron, all in an effort to deliver crucial information back to the Jedi Temple.
What We Know About the Maul – Shadow Lord Animated Series
Despite being set before the prequels, it’s been confirmed that “Shadow Lord” happens during the gap between “The Clone Wars” and “Rebels,” a period in Darth Maul’s storyline that hasn’t been thoroughly explored yet. Consequently, the influence of this novel on the series remains uncertain.
At Star Wars Celebration, a preview for the new series showed Maul taking on an apprentice, aiming to aid him in his relentless pursuit of vengeance against his adversaries. Remarkably, during the show Rebels, Maul sought to persuade Jedi Padawan Ezra Bridger to abandon his master and join forces with him as an apprentice. Given that the series Shadow Lord occurs prior to the events of Rebels, it seems likely that the upcoming storyline will delve into why Maul was so determined to enlist Ezra’s allegiance.
While an exact launch date hasn’t been announced just yet, the highly anticipated series “Maul Shadow Lord” is set to debut on Disney+ at some point in 2026.
