Actor Sam Witwer shares insights into the storylines planned for the much-anticipated Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord series on Disney+, which will delve deeper into the exploits of fan-adored character Darth Maul since the Empire took over the galaxy. With the spotlight on this iconic villain, viewers can expect to uncover previously untold aspects of his background as the animated series unfolds. Witwer offers a sneak peek at some of the plotlines that will be featured in the show.
At Star Wars Celebration Japan, ComicBook had a chat with Sam Witwer, who voices Darth Maul. When asked about giving depth and humanity to a character like Maul, Witwer said he tries to understand Maul’s viewpoint because the show explores this aspect. He humorously added that it helps to imagine Maul wearing his metal shoes. Essentially, it’s all about considering Maul’s opinions and perspectives since the series asks many questions. For example, did Maul anticipate the current order under Palpatine? Does he feel the universe has lost its vibrancy? How does Maul perceive the extinction of the Jedi Knights, with Kenobi possibly deceased?
Later on, Witwer discussed the aspect of Maul – Shadow Lord where Maul takes on an apprentice. He pondered, “What’s Maul’s approach to training an apprentice?” Not about how the Sith or Palpatine do it, but rather, “How does Maul do it? Given his distinct perspective on these matters, we get to delve into some intriguing aspects and even tackle things I’ve long wanted to bring to this character. However, Dave [Filoni] had always said, ‘That’s a great idea, but we can’t do it here.’ This was repeated several times during our collaborations. Little did I know that Maul eventually getting his own show was in the works, allowing us more time to explore ideas I’ve contemplated for years.
At Star Wars Celebration Japan, a preview trailer for the animated series titled “Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord” was unveiled, indicating that the show happens during the time gap between “The Clone Wars” and “Star Wars Rebels”. A notable fight scene caught the attention of “Star Wars” enthusiasts. The footage showed Maul battling a former Inquisitor named Marrok, with Marrok saying, “It’s true then. You’re still alive.” The series is set to premiere on Disney+ in 2026.
Initially introduced as a live-action character in “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace”, Darth Maul’s story was expanded upon in various Star Wars animated series. Characters such as Ahsoka, Grand Admiral Thrawn, Cad Bane, and Bo-Katan Kryze, who originated from these animated shows, have made their way into live-action productions. The rich tradition of Star Wars animation is ongoing with “Maul – Shadow Lord”, “Young Jedi Adventures”, “Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi”, “Star Wars: Visions”, and the recently concluded “Bad Batch”.
