Darth Maul’s Darkest Adventure Reimagined

At the Star Wars Celebration 2025 in Japan, several thrilling revelations were made. Notably, among the illustrious roster of guests – including Hayden Christensen and Dave Filoni – was Sam Witwer, renowned for voicing Darth Maul across various Star Wars animated series. His portrayal of Maul in the Season 4 finale of The Clone Wars, which marked Maul’s return from death, remains iconic. During the 20th-anniversary Lucasfilm Animation panel, Witwer confirmed that he will reprise his role as Maul in the upcoming animated series, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord. This announcement, along with the news of both Witwer and Maul’s return since 2018, has sparked immense excitement across the entire Star Wars fan community, further solidifying Maul’s position as a significant Sith Lord.

More recently, Witwer has resumed his role as Maul to narrate a fresh audiobook adaptation of the Star Wars Legends Essentials tale: “Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter“. This revamped animated series has become particularly appealing for enthusiasts of Maul and the ominous lore surrounding the Dark Side in the Star Wars universe.

Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter Shines a Light on Maul’s Early Actions

The book titled “Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter,” written by Michael Reeves, was first published in 2001. This story unfolds before the occurrences depicted in “The Phantom Menace.” In the Star Wars universe, Maul didn’t appear until 2012 in “The Clone Wars.” The book was reissued that year to align with the animated series and again in 2022 as part of “The Essential Legends Collection.” The term “Legends” refers to any Star Wars content produced before Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2014, excluding the original and prequel trilogy films and the “Clone Wars” series. This categorization aims to streamline all future stories into one continuous narrative without any inconsistencies. Given that “The Clone Wars” reintroduced Maul into the canon lore, it seems logical that Lucasfilm and Disney would adapt “Shadow Hunter” for the upcoming “Maul – Shadow Lord” animated series.

Prior to “The Phantom Menace,” the story “Shadow Hunter” unfolds with Darth Maul undertaking a task assigned by his master, Darth Sidious (Emperor Palpatine). As Sidious operates covertly, he learns that a crucial detail about his plot against the Trade Federation’s blockade of Naboo has been leaked. A Neimoidian within Viceroy Nute Gunray’s confidants, Hath Monchar, is responsible for stealing and escaping with this sensitive information, intending to profit from it on Coruscant’s black market. This breach could reveal Sidious’ carefully orchestrated schemes to the Jedi and the Republic Senate. Enraged by this imminent exposure of his intricate political machinations, Sidious sends Maul to Coruscant to track down Monchar and eliminate him permanently, thereby preserving the secrecy of the Sith’s plans.

Without Sidious and Maul knowing it, the stolen information had been secretly obtained by Lorn Pavan, a savvy yet weary information dealer who navigates the shady corners of Coruscant. Aware of the worth of this data – a Sith holocron revealing not just an upcoming blockade, but also incriminating Sidious – Lorn’s discovery immediately marked him as a potential target for Maul’s vengeance.

Amidst the chaos of data breaches and secret kill orders, I, Darsha Assant, a Jedi Padawan, am embarking on my critical journey towards Knighthood. My final test leads me to the perilous underbelly of Coruscant, where I’m chasing a clue linked to the Black Sun crime syndicate. It’s here that my path crosses with Lorn Pavan. Skeptical of the Jedi due to past grudges, Lorn eventually teams up with me, the green but determined Padawan, as the relentless pursuit by Maul intensifies. When we both become targets for Maul and bounty hunters after the holocron, we find ourselves fleeing while maneuvering through the treacherous underworld, aiming to evade Maul, bounty hunters, and safely deliver the crucial information to the Jedi Temple.

What We Know About the MaulShadow Lord Animated Series

While Shadow Hunter happens before the prequels, it’s known that Shadow Lord transpires during the gap between The Clone Wars and Rebels – an era in Maul’s life that has remained largely untold. As a result, it’s uncertain how this novel will influence the series.

At Star Wars Celebration, a preview for the new series hinted that Maul would be taking on an apprentice in his mission for revenge against his adversaries. Notably, during the show “Rebels,” Maul had attempted to persuade the Jedi Padawan, Ezra Bridger, to abandon his master and join him instead. Since the upcoming series “Shadow Lord” occurs before “Rebels,” it seems logical that we’ll learn more about why Maul was so determined to win over Ezra in the forthcoming show.

Despite not having a confirmed release date as of now, the much-anticipated series “Maul Shadow Lord” is slated to debut on Disney+ somewhere in the year 2026.
