As an enthusiast, I’m sharing the news from Phoenix Labs, the brilliant minds behind the captivating games like Dauntless and Fae Farm. Unfortunately, they’ve announced a difficult decision: most of their team members have been let go. The studio shared this tough news through a post on LinkedIn, where they described it as an unfortunate but necessary step.
Today at Phoenix Labs proves challenging, as stated in the announcement. Regrettably, we’ve chosen to separate from most of our team members due to some hard decisions being made regarding essential alterations in our company’s operations.
We acknowledge and highly value the efforts of everyone who’s been part of this journey. Their skills, commitment, and imaginative flair have made a lasting impression on our business and our games.
The studio hasn’t disclosed the specific number of employees who were terminated, and it hasn’t shared any information regarding future plans for Dauntless or Fae Farm either. However, they did mention that updates on these two projects will be shared in the forthcoming weeks.
In our line of work, we invite you all to connect with these outstanding professionals – they truly excel in their field,” suggested the studio.
Back in May 2024, the studio initiated a wave of layoffs and decided to scrap several projects under development, shifting its focus towards live service games instead. Reports suggested that over 100 employees were affected by this decision made back then. Following a similar pattern, another move has been taken recently.
The update is in response to a significant decrease in players for the game Dauntless, leading to a shift away from its initial design philosophy, which aimed to offer a fresh perspective on the Monster Hunter genre. These alterations have steered the game towards an action RPG format, making monsters less prominent as the large bosses that it was previously celebrated for.
Phoenix Labs explained that the modifications they made to Dauntless were intended to establish a robust base for ongoing development within their new seasonal content approach. Yet, since this update, player reactions have been largely unfavorable. To put it into perspective, at the time of writing, Dauntless has garnered reviews that are predominantly negative for recent ones and overwhelmingly negative for all.
Contrary to expectations, it appears that Fae Farm steered clear of the developer’s aspirations for a live service model, instead allowing its player community to continue enjoying the game. On Steam, this translates to overwhelmingly positive ratings from both recent and all reviews.
