Phoenix Labs, creators of the cooperative RPG game Dauntless, have shared that they will turn off their servers on May 29, 2025 at 11:45 PST. This means that players will no longer be able to play Dauntless after this date.
As a devoted gamer, I’ve found myself left in the dark about my favorite game. The developers haven’t shared any reasons behind its sudden shutdown, leaving only a brief announcement on its Steam page as a clue.
The studio has announced that Dauntless will cease operations on May 29, 2025. After this date, no new content or updates will be added and the game will no longer be playable.
The news arrives a month following Phoenix Labs experiencing job cuts that primarily impacted the team. On LinkedIn, they announced these layoffs, labeling them as “regrettable yet essential.
Almost a year ago, in May 2024, we experienced similar rounds of layoffs. Simultaneously, the studio decided to shelve numerous projects they had been secretly working on.
Regarding Dauntless, its server shutdown occurs mere months following a significant overhaul it underwent in December. This transformation was referred to as “Dauntless: Awakening,” and the game’s direction shifted towards becoming a live-service title, featuring an updated quest system for players to explore and advance through.
Originally designed as a game similar to Monster Hunter, Awakening’s release fundamentally transformed it into something more akin to a typical action RPG, which sparked quite a debate among the player community. Many players voiced their disapproval through negative reviews. As of now, Dauntless is receiving mostly Negative reviews for its recent feedback and Overwhelmingly Negative ratings across all reviews.
The adjustments implemented in Dauntless during the Awakening update were characterized by the developers as laying a robust base to build upon for future game content, particularly considering their aim for a seasonal content strategy.
In the context of the Awakening update, some significant aspects of the Monster Hunter-inspired gameplay pattern in Dauntless have been taken away. This affects the cycle of hunting the game’s monsters, known as Behemoths, for materials to craft new weapons and armor. The update also significantly reduced the variety of weapons available, replacing many with a smaller selection.
The recent update in Dauntless resulted in a total reset of many advancement zones, affecting numerous players’ progress. In response, the development team has issued several subsequent updates as a gesture of apology to long-time players who were disappointed by losing their prior progress in the game.
As a gamer, I’ve got to admit that it’s sad news about Dauntless getting shut down. However, Phoenix Labs’ other game, Fae Farm, is still thriving and going strong. Although new content hasn’t been pouring in for this cozy farming sim yet, the game has managed to maintain a Mostly Positive review aggregate on Steam, which speaks volumes about its quality.
The outlook for Phoenix Labs is presently uncertain, but it’s worth noting that Fae Farm may continue to thrive due to its independence from Phoenix Labs’ live-service strategy. However, the closure of Dauntless could potentially have far-reaching implications for the studio.
