In an interview promoting his new movie “Lost Lands” (released March 7th), Dave Bautista indicated his willingness to reprise the role of Drax in the Marvel Cinematic Universe under one specific condition: if James Gunn, who now co-heads DC Studios, is involved and asks him to return. Although Bautista acknowledges it may be unlikely, he hasn’t ruled out a comeback altogether. He shared that he has expressed interest in any potential role within the Marvel universe during discussions with the filmmakers.
Drax isn’t open to me for future projects unless James Gunn personally reaches out and asks me to reprise the role. However, since that’s highly unlikely, I’m not really interested,” Bautista stated. Referring to Gunn’s current work with DC, he mentioned, “If James were to call me, but of course, that’s not going to happen.
Bautista expressed his eagerness to be part of either the Marvel or DC universe, as he is a fan of both comic books and their respective universes. He’s already made his interest known to James Gunn and the Russo brothers, and has personally communicated with all of them, requesting not to be overlooked for future roles. However, he feels that the Drax character’s story arc has reached its conclusion.
In 2014, Bautista first appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe through the original “Guardians of the Galaxy” movie. Immediately, he won over fans with his impressive action skills and impeccable comic timing. Besides playing the role again in the two sequels to “Guardians of the Galaxy” (and a holiday special), Bautista also featured in “Avengers: Infinity War,” “Avengers: Endgame,” and “Thor: Love and Thunder.
Leading up to the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in 2023, Bautista has openly expressed his wish to step down from the role of Drax. He yearns for opportunities that offer more dramatic parts and allow him to demonstrate his versatility as an actor. Earlier, he had suggested a potential collaboration with Gunn on another project, but acknowledged that they haven’t discussed it yet.
According to Bautista’s statements, it seems unlikely that there will be a Guardians of the Galaxy 4 directed by James Gunn, as he is currently focusing on the development of the DC Universe franchise. Although Gunn had a successful stint with Marvel Studios, his involvement with the MCU seems to have ended for now, which means we might have seen the last of Drax in this universe. However, considering their past collaborations, it’s not surprising that Bautista would be open to working with Gunn again in the future. It will be intriguing to see if Gunn finds a place for him in the DC Universe.
It’s unclear what will transpire with the Guardians of the Galaxy within the MCU, as their story seems to have reached a conclusive and emotional end in the third movie. At present, there doesn’t appear to be plans for another Guardians film, given Marvel’s focus on wrapping up the Multiverse Saga. This could potentially be advantageous, considering Gunn’s unique directorial style has become so intertwined with these characters that it might be challenging to envision anyone else taking on a fourth installment. As for Bautista, if Robert Downey Jr. can reprise his role as Doctor Doom, then any former Marvel actor could potentially step into another character within the MCU.
