As a lifelong Manchester United fan, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of sadness and loss with the passing of Kath Phipps. Having started her journey with the club at just 15 years old, David Beckham’s career trajectory was forever intertwined with hers, and their bond was undeniably special.

David Beckham is mourning the loss of a longtime friend.

In simpler terms, the former soccer pro, who started playing for Manchester United when he was just 15 years old, paid his respects to the club’s long-term receptionist, Kath Phipps, following her passing at the age of 85.

In a December 5th Instagram post, David mentioned that Kath, who always sat at reception at Old Trafford, would be the first and last face he’d see, handing him tickets for the game. Kath was the lifeblood of Manchester United; everyone recognized her and loved her dearly.

The six-time Premier League champion, who is father to Brooklyn (25), Romeo (22), Cruz (19), and Harper (13) with his wife Victoria Beckham, mentioned that he had a unique bond with Kath ever since their initial encounter.

David shared that he relocated to Manchester when he was 15 years old. On this occasion, Kath made a vow to his parents: “I will take care of your son, so you need not worry.” And true to her word, from the very first day until our last moment together, she faithfully fulfilled that promise.

Expressing that “Old Trafford won’t feel the same without your radiant smile as we pass through those doors,” he included in his tribute to Kath, “We adore you.

At Manchester United, where Kath spent an impressive 55 years in multiple positions within the company, they also acknowledged the significant influence she had on her colleagues during her time there.

The soccer club’s site posted: “Kath always managed to leave her tough days at home when she came to work. Her consistently upbeat demeanor created a welcoming atmosphere for all who entered the training ground. Whether it was professional athletes, regular employees, or passing visitors, Kath was always there with a listening ear and motivating words whenever someone needed them.

And the receptionist was vocal about her own love for the sport and her work.

In a 2023 interview, she shared that during her time here, she’s never had a disagreement with anyone. She always greets each day with enthusiasm, flashing a smile and saying ‘good morning.’ She genuinely enjoys being here. Not many can say they love their job, but for her, football is more than just a job – it’s her life.
