As a seasoned cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the rich tapestry of DC Comics adaptations, I must say that the new Superman costume unveiled by James Gunn is nothing short of breathtaking. The balance between classic elements and modern flair is exquisitely executed, and it’s evident that great care has been taken to ensure authenticity while still appealing to a contemporary audience.
In a groundbreaking move, Creature Commandos marked the start of the DC Studios era on television screens. Now, fans are getting their first glimpse at DC Studios’ big-screen introduction of Superman. The initial trailer for James Gunn’s Superman offers an unprecedented peek into David Corenswet‘s portrayal of the Man of Steel, featuring the fresh costume design. At a Superman trailer premiere gathering, ComicBook had the opportunity to chat with Corenswet about this new outfit, and he shared his favorite aspect of the costume – it’s not the traditional Superman briefs.
During our time outside in Cleveland, some individuals with powerful cameras captured footage of the rooftop and others shared videos of the cape with me. I commented that the cape looks amazing, and it’s authentic since visual effects (CGI) are often required when there are wires or other equipment involved. The most challenging part was gracefully getting up from the floor without accidentally stepping on it and damaging it.
Corenswet commented, ‘In many aspects, I believe that’s the most impressive aspect of the costume.’ To be honest, it just doesn’t seem as cool without the cape. Without the cape, the suit seems rather ordinary, but when you put on the cape, it’s like a whole new level…
The suit appears to blend aspects of “All-Star Superman” with timeless features and a hint of contemporary style, and one of those timeless elements is the red briefs. There’s often discussion about the briefs whenever Superman’s costume is redesigned, particularly following the New 52 phase when they were removed. However, they came back later on and have been a consistent feature since the Rebirth period. In an earlier conversation with ComicBook, James Gunn mentioned that it was Corenswet who convinced him to incorporate the briefs into the costume design.
Reflecting on the discussion at hand, I must admit it wasn’t an overly passionate back-and-forth. However, there was a period where tempers flared. I found myself firmly in the ‘no trunks’ camp for quite some time. Intriguingly, Zack Snyder, the Man of Steel director, shared that he experimented with countless trunk variations as we did. Yet, my persistence echoed like a mantra: no trunks, no trunks, no trunks. Eventually, I conceded and said, let’s persevere and continue testing the trunk versions. David Corenswet then uttered something that truly resonated with me.
As a movie enthusiast, I was juggling various concepts for Superman, testing different looks, from the traditional trunks to a more modern approach. During this process, James Gunn shared an insightful thought: Superman, being an alien with extraordinary powers, can make beams of light shoot from his eyes and even topple trucks effortlessly. Given his immense power, he could come off as intimidating or even scary. However, the essence of Superman is not to instill fear, but rather to reassure children that he’s a friendly figure. He yearns to be a symbol of hope and optimism, a beacon that inspires positivity.
Superman soars into theaters on July 11, 2025.
